You will be expected to undertake the following roles
Research, to include:
Generally:
 An internationally visible research profile, having excellence with impact.
 The support of research through grant funding (EPSRC, MRC, EU, TSB, industry),
supervision of research staff and of PhD students.
 Preparation and submission of manuscripts for publication in high quality peer
reviewed journals.
 Representing the school and university at national and international meetings to
disseminate research outputs.
Specifically:
 Contribution to the creation of new cross-disciplinary research between EECE and
the Faculty of Medical Sciences
 Act as a bridge between EECE and the Faculty of Medical Sciences, enabling
other staff within EECE to build successful research links and so expand this
research theme.
 Initiate new research programmes in biomedical electronics, identifying the
appropriate team needed to deliver such cross disciplinary research.
 Networking regionally, nationally and internationally in order to ensure that
biomedical electronics research at Newcastle is connected to decision makers and
to world leading research activity in this space.
 Significant improvement in research esteem for the School and University.
Undergraduate and MSc teaching, to include:
Generally:
 Delivery of lectures and seminars
 Delivery of practical based teaching, both in the laboratory and in the field

Contribution and attendance, where required, on residential field courses which
may include overseas travel
 Supervision of BEng, MEng and MSc dissertations
 Acting as a personal tutor to include academic support and pastoral care
 Setting of in course assessment, marking and feedback
 Setting of exam questions and marking of scripts
 Develop and lead new modular additions to the current teaching syllabus where
appropriate
Specifically:
 Development of projects for postgraduate teaching and research students in areas
pertinent to biomedical electronics.
 Enhancement of the curriculum by informing teaching through the latest research.
Engagement
Undertake a range of activities including consultancy and engagement with
governmental and non-governmental organisations. Contribute to the ongoing EECE
outreach activities that may include school and company visits, public lectures and
contributions to weekend events and summer schools.

Knowledge (inc. Qualifications)
Essential
 A Good Honours degree in relevant subject
 PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject
 In-depth subject knowledge/expertise in specific area of scholarship
 Academic teaching qualification
Desirable
 A relevant professional qualification or Masters degree
Skills (professional, technical, managerial, practical)
Essential
 High level of analytical and problem-solving capability, with the personal skills,
initiative and drive to achieve the solution
 Ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing
 The knowledge, ability and expertise to teach the relevant subject at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including large group and small group
teaching and project supervision.
 Ability to engage with and respond enthusiastically and positively to students
 The ability to engage counselling skills and pastoral care where appropriate
 Ability to work collaboratively and constructively with both academic colleagues
and support staff to encourage the commitment of others
 The ability to persuade and influence at all levels in order to foster and maintain
relationships, resolving tensions/difficulties as they arise
 Good networking skills and the ability to develop productive links with fellow
professionals from other organisations and agencies with whom the University

Experience and Achievements
Essential
 International standing in research with track record of achieving grant and
research contract awards, leading journal publications and conference
participation
 A regular and high quality publication record for the discipline, with peer
reviewed publications at international level
 Able to meet the University’s standard for submission to the Research
Excellence Framework
 Evidence of success in developing innovative research proposals and securing
research funding from major funding agencies
 Original thinking and analysis of complex information that has led to the
bringing of new insights to the research undertaken
 A clear, ambitious yet realistic vision for their research that represents a good fit
with the aims of the academic unit
 Experience of presentation of work to the national/international research
community (at conferences, seminars and similar high profile events)
 Proven delivery of research outcomes to a defined timescale
 Evidence of effective management of projects and teams, especially those
involving multi-disciplinary teams
 Evidence of success in collaborative research
 Evidence of the recruitment and successful and timely supervision of research
students through to completion
 Demonstrable success in the teaching, support and supervision of
