Equations: V= d/t
a = (Vf-Vi)/t
1. If a bus leaves BFS at 10:30 in the morning and arrives 250 km away at 4:00 in the afternoon, what was
its average speed?
V = d/t
250km/5.5 hrs = 45.5 km/hr
2. How long does it take a turtle to move 3 meters if it is moving at a speed of 10m/hr
V = d/t
t = d/v
t = 3m/10m/hr
t = .3 hours
3. The glider had been travelling at 30 m/s when a wind blew against it causing its speed to change to 18
m/s in 3 seconds. What was the deceleration?
a = (vf-vi)/t a = (18m/s – 30 m/s) / 3 s
a = -12/3
a = -4 m/s squared
4. A roller coaster car rapidly picks up speed as it rolls down a slope. As it starts down the slope, its speed
is 4 m/s. But 3 seconds later, at the bottom of the slope, its speed is 22 m/s. What is its average
acceleration?
a = (vf-vi)/t
a = (22 m/s – 4 m/s) / 3 s
a = 18/3
a = 6 m/s squared
5. A cyclist accelerates from 0 m/s to 8 m/s in 3 seconds. What is his acceleration ? Is this acceleration
higher than that of a car which accelerates from 0 to 30 m/s in 8 seconds?
Cyclist a = (vf-vi)/ time
a = (8m/s – 0 m/s) / 3 s
a = 8/3
a = 2.67 m/s squared
Car  a – (vf-vi) / time
a = (30m/s – 0 m/s) / 8
a = 30/8
a = 3.75 m/s squared
6. A car advertisement states that a certain car can accelerate from rest to 70 km/h in 7 seconds. Find the
car’s average acceleration.
IGNORE THIS QUESTION!!!!!!!!!
7. A lizard accelerates from 2 m/s to 10 m/s in 4 seconds. What is the lizard’s average acceleration?
a = (Vf-Vi) / t a = (10m/s – 2m/s) / 4
a = 8/4
a = 2 m/s squared
8. You are traveling in a car that is moving at a velocity of 20 m/s. Suddenly, a car 10 meters in front of
you slams on it’s brakes. At that moment, you also slam on your brakes and slow to 5 m/s. Calculate
the acceleration if it took 2 seconds to slow your car down.
a = (vf – vi) / t
a = (5 m/s – 20 m/s) / 2s
a = -15/2
a = -7.5 m/s squared
9. A ball is dropped from the top of a building. After 2 seconds, it’s velocity is measured to be 19.6 m/s.
Calculate the acceleration for the dropped ball.
a = (vf – vi) / t
a = (19.6m/s – 0m/s) / 2 s
a = 19.6 / 2
a = 9.8 m/s squared
10. You were sitting at your desk when you realized you forgot your notebook for class. You sprinted to
your locker at 2.5 m/s . It took you 15 seconds to get to your locker. What was your acceleration?
a = (vf-vi) / t
a = (2.5 m/s – 0m/s) / 15s
a = 2.5/15
a = .17 m/s squared
