Summary of the University of Salford’s
Equality and Diversity Statistics Students
Produced in accordance with the Public Duty Reporting Guidelines
RQ/Student Data 2012-13
Page 1
Introduction
This report summarises the University’s position in the academic year 2012/13. It has not been possible
to report against all the protected characteristics, namely Religion and Sexual Orientation, as the
process for collation of these are being finalised.. However, further work is being undertaken this year to
engage staff and students to collect and collate this information as far as it is practicable. All of the
graphs have comparison data illustrated to enable us to show the trends over time.
Background
The overall aim of the Equality Act (2010) Public Sector Equality Duty is to make sure that public bodies
take into account as part of their decision making process. Therefore the University needs to
demonstrate how it advances equality by:
 Removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by anyone with a protected
characteristic
 Taking steps to meet the needs of people who share a protected characteristic that is
different from those who do not have it
 Encouraging people with a protected characteristic to participate in public life or other
activities where their participation is low
General Duty
The three aims of the General Duty are to:
 Eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct that is
prohibited by the Equality Act
 Advance equality of opportunity between those who share a protected characteristic
and those who do not
 Foster good relations between those who share a protected characteristic and those
who do not by tackling prejudice and promoting understanding
In 2011 the University, alongside all public organisations, was required to publish information to persons
who share a relevant protected characteristic who are:
 Its employees (if over 150 staff)
 Other persons affected by its policies and practices (our students)
