Dear HMS families,
I am so excited to be helping out with costuming for this year’s production of Beauty and the Beast JR.
The goal is to keep the costumes somewhat simple as well as comfortable for the performers and as
economical as we can. Second- hand and Thrift stores may be our best sources for what we need.
Medieval clothing will be the inspiration for our costumes. Below are some suggestions to help you in
the search of costumes for your “up-coming” stars!
NARRATOR’S and VILLAGERS:
Boys: Neutral or soft colored pants and shirts with ties, vests or jackets to create the period
look.
Girls: Neutral or soft colored blouses, long skirts, aprons, and laced up vests. Layering of
multiple skirts will also work.
SERVANTS:
Long- sleeved black t-shirts and black pants. Fabrics that have some give or stretch will work
well.
WOLVES:
Gray, silver or black sweatshirts and sweatpants will work. For the headwear, please look for
“Wolf” hats that are popular these days. I saw some online for $11.00. Hats with the eyes
and nose will work the best.
MONSIEUR D’ARQUE:
Should wear layers of black; long jacket or tails, black pants or knickers, ascot and black hat.
MADAME DE LA GRANDE BOUCHE:
For most of the play she will be in a “dresser” costume. After her transformation she will be
In a very ornate dress with lots of trimmings. Look for a long dress with lace, beads, sequins,
etc. The more ornate the better. Any color except gold or yellow will work.
CHIP:
Base costume should be a button down shirt and black pants. A “jaunty” hat will top off his
character.
MRS. POTT’S:
Her base costume should be a frilly white blouse, a long white apron, and a long skirt, possibly
with a flowered pattern. It would be helpful if the flowered pattern would resemble something
you might see on an Antique tea pot. Roses or carnations with some leaves would work well.
BABETTE:
Base costume should be a long- sleeved jersey shirt and long skirt of the same dark color.
LUMIERE:
Base costume: A brocade fitted vest with full-sleeved shirt and knickers in period style and
fabric would work best.
COGSWORTH:
Base costume: A long, full white blouse with lacey cuffs, a black (or dark color) vest, a necktie,
and solid-color knickers with white tights or tall socks.
LEFOU:
His a comedic character and should be in brighter colored clothing. He should have a jacket with
a contrasting vest (print, plaid), a large, ridiculous bow, tied around his collar and knickers with
tights or pants with boots .
GASTON:
Base costume should be black pants and high-cuffed boots.
MAURICE:
An oversized peasant shirt, eccentric plaid knickers, large vest with pockets, scarf of contrasting
color, tall argyle socks or tights, and black shoes with large buckles.
OLD BEGGAR WOMAN/ENCHANTRESS:
A large hooded cape (to hide face), and a floor length dress with a full skirt (circular for spinning)
(maybe made out of knit fabric), in white or jeweled tone color.
BELLE:
Peasant girl look: White blouse with full sleeves and soft rounded collar, a blue floor length
Jumper or sleeveless dress, with a full skirt, and a white apron. Her formal dress should be out
of a gold colored fabric. It should be floor length with a full circular skirt. This can be very
ornate with lots of ruffles, lace, and trim.
BEAST:
For his base costume he should have a pair of long black pants, and a white full-sleeved shirt.
High cuffed black boots would work for his footwear.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call me. I am looking forward to working with you and
your children to make this not only a great production but also a great experience!
