Trade at this year’s East of England Smithfield Festival Peterborough topped at
£9000 for the show’s supreme beef champion, Northern Irish-based Dermot and
Gareth Small’s Limousin cross heifer Khaleesi.
Shown by Stephanie Dick, this heifer is a daughter of the noted crossbred calf
breeder Swarland Eddie and was bred by fellow Northern Irishman James Alexander,
Randalstown, and has an impressive show record behind her.
Previously supreme champion at Agri-Expo and reserve heifer champion at Livescot,
she was also reserve commercial champion at Balmoral back in May.
Khaleesi weighed 622kg on show day and sold to Southern Irish buyer, Rob
McGivern, Co Cork, for further showing.
Leading trade in the Baby Beef classes was Dougie MacBeath and Sarah-Jane
Jessop’s heifer calf Munchkin, with this one selling to Jason and Sarah Wareham,
Heathfield, East Sussex.
And making £5000 was Black Jack, a Limousin cross bullock from G O D Commercials,
with this one selling to Elfed Williams.
Also selling across the water for further showing in Ireland was Trevor Lyon and
family’s steer at 570p/kg. This was British Blue cross Fire Fly at 562kg, while making
400p/kg was Kevin Ludgate’s Limousin cross heifer Heidi at 634kg, selling to Ted
Wotton.
The reserve overall champion from the pre-sale show, the Edwards family’s heifer
Miss Halfpenny, then sold at £3000, again going to Ted Wotton.
This one is again Limousin sired, being by a Penygelly bull bred by Bryan Griffiths,
Kerry, Newtown, and weighed in at 542kg. She was reserve commercial champion at
the Royal Welsh in July as well as being first at Agri-Expo and first at the Welsh
Winter Fair earlier this week.
Leading the sheep trade at £410/head were a pair of Beltex ewe lambs from Andrew
and Becky Bishop, with this pair selling for breeding to Nicola Beardsley.
Then at £360 was one half of the championship pair from David and Linda Wadland.
This wether lamb sold to Aubrey Allen Meats, Coventry, while it’s pen mate, a ewe
lamb sold at £325 to Nicola Beardsley.
Ivanhoe Livestock then sold a pair of Blue Texel ewe lambs at £300/head to Billy
Burton, with a pair of crossbred ewe lambs from the same home making £200 to the
same buyer.
And also at £200/head were a pair of Suffolk cross ewe lambs from Malcolm
Stewart, with these selling to Messrs Pollyn, Walpole.
