Notes of the meeting of the Active Travel and Countryside group
Held on Monday 10th February 2014 at Cartmel village hall at 7.00pm
Present - Percy Unsworth(PU), Gill Bates(GB), Barbara Copeland(BC), Susan Pettman(SP), Jennie
Martin(JM), Graham Reddish(GR), Norma Reddish(NR) and Mary Wilson(MW)
Apologies – Sue Hotchkiss(SH), Susan Crabtree(SC) and Angela Shepherd(AS)
MW reviewed the evidence in the Community plan which described the issues identified by
residents. She also referred to the evidence collected at the footpath consultation.
Discussion took place about the work the Allithwaite community group was undertaking regarding
traffic and pedestrian movements within the village – BC and G and NR asked to be invited to the
next meeting of this group.
The scope and possible actions for this group were discussed –
There was uncertainty about the work that could be done with regard to identifying and valuing the
countryside. It was decided to leave this work for the time being with the hope that some aspects
may evolve from the work on footpaths.
The work on active travel could be considered as follows
Safer travel between villages – members would examine road links and identify dangerous parts –
they would also look for opportunities to develop off road safer routes which could be promoted
through improved signage.
Three identified to date include Cartmel to Cark, Allithwaite to Cartmel, Cartmel to Aynesome.
The group would welcome any comments/ ideas on these routes.
Improving existing Footpaths and Bridleways – members decided to focus most work in the next 6
weeks on this. It was agreed that members would review as many routes as possible both in
Allithwaite and Cartmel. It was agreed that it didn’t matter if routes were duplicated as new eyes
spotted different issues.
Reviewing routes would include – a sketch map(using OS as base) of route with annotations or
descriptions which would focus on :Signage,
Stiles, gates etc and ease of use – dog friendly etc – bug/wheel chair friendly.
Condition of path
View points, historical context, ecology , geology – opportunities for interpretation boards. (it was
hoped that this might inform the work on countryside at a later date)
The suitability of any route to become buggy/ wheelchair friendly with some initial ideas of
issues/areas of improvements which might be needed.
*GB would contact Bob Bunce for any input he could give on the ecology side.
*BC would suggest a walk for Gand NR she would also liaise with AS, SP and SM about routes in
Allithwaite
*GB would brief SC and SH about the work of the group and liaise with PU on routes around Cartmel
*MW would concentrate on routes on the western side of Cartmel
The group would welcome any contributions from other residents or visitors. Duplication of routes
was seen as something to be recommended.
New routes
Two were initially identified
Cartmel village along the river Eae to Cark Shaw woods
Allithwaite/ Grange - along Quarry lane through the quarry and open access land to Grange across a
field which has been identified as part of the land allocation process. This field at present has no
access and work would need to be done with Grange to agree this inclusion when the development
came forward.
The meeting closed at 8.30
The next meeting would be held on Monday 17th March at 7pm venue to be circulated with notice
of meeting
(MW 11-02-14)
