Density Column Experiment
Question: How does density affect the separation of matter?
Hypothesis: (circle one)
a. Denser matter rises above less dense matter.
b. Density has no effect on the separation of matter.
c. Denser matter sinks below less dense matter.
d. Other:______________________________________

Experiment:
Materials
Procedure
1 graduated cylinder
1 scale
1 turkey baster/dispenser
1 cylindrical glass container
Liquids (40 mL of each):
-Lamp oil
-Rubbing alcohol
-Vegetable oil
-Water
-Dawn dish soap
-1% milk
-100% amber maple syrup
-Light corn syrup
-Honey
Solids:
-Ping pong ball
-Soda cap
-Cherry tomato
-Popcorn kernels
-Die
-Bolt
1. Find the mass of the graduated cylinder.
2. Pour 40 mL of a liquid into the cylinder and find the mass
of the cylinder with the liquid.
3. Subtract the mass of the cylinder from the mass of
the cylinder with the liquid to find the mass of just the liquid.
4. Divide the mass of the liquid by its volume (40mL) to find
its density. Reduce to find its density per milliliter.
5. Wash and dry the graduated cylinder.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for all other liquids.
7. Find the mass of a solid object.
8. Pour 40 ml of water into the cylinder.
9. Drop the solid object into the cylinder and note how much
the water level rises. This change in water level is the volume
of the object. (If the solid object floats in water its volume will
have to be found though other means)
10. Divide the mass of the object by its volume to find its
density. Reduce to find the object’s density per milliliter.
11. Repeat steps 7-10 for all other solids.
12. Number the liquid and solid objects according to their
density.
13. Using the turkey baster, insert 40 mL of each liquid
into the cylindrical glass container. Insert the liquids in
order from greatest to least density.
14. Drop in the solid objects.
15. Draw a diagram showing how the layers and
objects separated.
