Limited ability, questionable balance, minimal endurance Prefers short, leisurely
walks, may have physical limitations
Beginners, Inexperienced with hiking trails; arrived at site as s tourist, not
prepared for rough terrain
First time on a non-surfaced path, street shoes at best
Interested to try hiking or nature adventure but relatively new
Somewhat prepared, but no map, little concept of varied/rough terrain, may not
understand trail blaze standards
Moderately experienced, has done some hiking, has appropriate footwear
Prior experience may have been with hiking groups
Somewhat familiar with some access areas and associated trail sections
Experienced: Maps/knowledge of resources/trail information/many types and
varieties of trails
Appropriate outdoor/hiking gear
Self-directed or with a few companions.
Able to determine location and find the way out
Extensive experience- several years, many types of trail and terrain, appropriate
outdoor gear, capable of independent hiking,
Able to handle severe conditions-rugged terrain, significant obstacles, rock
outcrops, steep inclines and declines, hand and foot rock climbs, steep and long
hills, long trips
Accessible is a class of its own, to be defined separately
