Village Montessori School
After School Primary/Elementary Extra Curricular Program 2010-11
Primary Art
Students will enjoy a variety of art projects and media during class. Exposure to a variety
of artistic styles and creative motifs allow children to explore artistic expression in fun and
familiar atmosphere. Projects will be geared toward students’ area of interest. Works will
include exposure to 2D and 3D creations which will help facilitate the development of their fine
and gross motor skills.
Elementary Art
This program changes yearly based on the interest of the students. They will experience
an array of art media in this class. The goal is to take advantage of the smaller setting by getting
involved in larger and more intricate art projects. Suitable for any boy or girl who enjoys art,
this class will help build a strong foundation of different mediums.
Students will explore the whole creative process from beginning to end. They will also
begin learning how to critic works of art. Throughout the elementary years, it is stressed that
there are no wrong answers in art and that there is an endless variety of solutions to any given
artistic challenge.
Primary Ballet
This imaginative dance class is 45 minutes in length and offers both tap and ballet.
Classes are taught once a week with whimsical tunes and props such as tiaras, pony sticks,
glitter, magic wands, and more! Your child will learn basic tap and ballet steps, proper form and
terms. Ballet provides the basis for all dance technique. Children learn skills in listening,
coordination, poise and grace. Improved posture, balance, coordination, focus, and body
awareness are all benefits to this class.
Our experienced instructor is a VMS parent.
Elementary Chess
This session is open to all students interested in learning to play chess. No prior
knowledge of chess required. Students begin with the step-by-step approach developed by
Championship Chess. As each piece is introduced, students play pre-chess games-from Pawns,
Queen, Bishops, Rooks and the Knights. Then, as the King is introduced, students learn about
check, checkmate and stalemate and all the special moves of chess and are ready to play full
games.
Students who play full games are ready to improve chess skills through the introduction
and practice of chess openings and endgames. Students learn open, active games that apply basic
chess tactics and improve overall strategy and problem solving. Students in this group are
encouraged to participate in local tournaments.
Primary Musikgarten
For years, Musikgarten has held the standard of being the optimal combination of music
and movement, as well as cognitive and social development. The class will specifically cater to
Primary-aged children and will involve singing, dancing, imaginative play, as well as immersion
in concepts such as rhythm patterns, major and minor chord patterns, and use of musical
instruments.
In every way, Musikgarten reflects traditional Montessori practices. Each Musikgarten
session is designed according to how children learn and develop. The program takes a holistic
approach to music education, allowing your child to combine motor skills, active listening,
language, and social interaction in every lesson. Musikgarten is a fun and exciting program that
will instill a life-long love of music in any child!
Soccer Shots (all ages)
Soccer Shots is a uniquely designed program that will introduce soccer to your child in a
fun, safe, and controlled environment. Each week a 30 minute soccer session will offer basic
soccer skills, fun games, and competitions to your child. The program will emphasize character
forming lessons such as fair team play, individual concentration and cooperation, and
encouragement.
The benefits of enrolling your child in Soccer Shots are increased psychomotor
development through fun fitness activities, character formation (lessons in honesty, sharing,
helping, respect, self-control, attitude), and development of active lifestyle habits.
Primary Spanish
The primary program focuses on developing listening and speaking skills. Children learn
Spanish with lesson plans that include topics familiar to the child. Spanish words and phrases are
taught using simple rhythms. Themes include greetings, colors, numbers, food and clothing.
These topics include an oral or visual activity to help the child teach and reinforce knowledge of
the new language they are learning. Topics include Spanish pronunciation, basic concepts,
vocabulary and culture. Some games and songs are also incorporated so that the child can learn
Spanish in a fun way.
Early exposure to other languages creates a facility for understanding and speaking, as
well as greater ease in later study. It also creates an early awareness of different cultures.
