ERASMUS MUNDUS “AESOP PLUS” PROGRAMME – 2014/2015
This project is funded by the European Commission within the framework of the Erasmus
Mundus Partnerships Programme. The Erasmus Mundus Programme aims at enhancing the
quality of higher education and promotes the dialogue and understanding between people
and cultures through mobility and academic cooperation. Action 2 Partnerships are the basis
for enhancing academic cooperation and exchanges of students and academics,
contributing towards the socio-economic development of non-EU countries targeted by EU
external cooperation policy.
Historical
Since 2011, the University of Pretoria has been part of the Erasmus Mundus Programmes
and many postgraduate students and staff members from South Africa have received more
than 500 scholarships since to study and conduct research at various European universities.
Until 2014, the scholarships were only granted to South Africans going to Europe. From
2014 European students and Staff are also eligible to apply for scholarships to come to
South African Universities to study or conduct research. .
About AESOP Plus (theme: A European and South African Partnership on Heritage
and Past) p
The University of Pretoria is proud to once again (for the 2nd consecutive time since
2013/2014) be associated with the Erasmus Mundus scholarship Programme AESOP Plus
(called AESOP in the previous round) for the academic cycle of 2014/15. University of
Pretoria students and staff will be eligible to apply for this scholarship programme as part of
the Target Group 1 category (where UP is a SA Consortium partner). Paul Sabatier
University in Toulouse, France is the European co-coordinating partner of AESOP Plus with
the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town, the South African coordinating
partner.
AESOP Plus is a mobility programme offering study, training, exchange and research
periods
at AESOP Plus Consortium universities in Europe for South African Masters, PhD
Candidates as well as Postdoc fellows and staff members (academic and non-academic)
and also provides the same opportunities to Europeans wanting to come to South African
Consortium partners for the same purpose.
AESOP involves 8 thematic fields and encourages the Collaboration between different
sectors applied to cultural and natural heritage.

In this call, scholarships will be given for mobilities starting in 2015. Mobilities for South
African grant holders can start as soon as July 2015 (PhD, post-doc and staff) and
September 2015 (Master). European scholarship holders can start by early July 2015. All
mobilities (except staff members) will have to start before December 31st, 2015. The
AESOP Plus Programme will end on 14 July 2018 and all mobilities will have to end by then.
Partners
The partnership is coordinated by Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France whereas
Western Cape University in Cape Town (South Africa) acts as joint coordinator. The

Scholarships
The AESOP Plus partnership awards grants to support South African mobility to a European
partner university at Masters, PhD, Postdoc research and Staff level. Scholarships are
granted for European mobility to a South African partner university and for South African
mobility to a EU university. The duration of the mobility varies from 1 to 34 months according
to the level and the type of mobility. Grants include a monthly subsistence allowance to
cover your accommodation and living expenses, health insurance, participation fees (if
applicable) and travel costs.
The AESOP Consortium will manage the partnership and will organize 95 mobilities (62
South African applicants (to Europe) and 33 European applicants (to SA) in Master,
Doctorate, Post Doctorate and Staff).

Insurance coverage
Participation fees (if applicable) . The AESOP Plus programme can cover tuition fees
between Euro 3 000 and Euro 9.000 for degree seeking Masters students and for PhD ‘s
depending on the duration of the mobility (longer than 10 months) . Tuition fees will be paid
directly to the European host university.
Calls for applications
The new Call for applications for South African Staff and students, has been opened on 7
November 2014 and will close on 10 March 2015 (not as earlier mentioned 10 February 2015).
Selection results will be published by the end of April 2015. Study periods in Europe will start

The University of Toulouse III Paul Sabatier was founded in 1229 and is among some of the
oldest universities in the world along with Oxford University, University of Bologna, La
Sorbonne and the University of Salamanca.
The whole scientific disciplines in health, technologies and sport are taught at the University
Paul Sabatier, whose size, scientific radiation, number of students, quality of its courses
makes it one of the very best universities in France.
The university is structured in several Units of Formation and Research (UFR), Faculties and
Institutes, account nearly 28000 students, 2000 professors-researchers, 600 researchers
working for national organizations of research and 1300 Engineers. The UPS forms each
year several thousands of scientists and technical junior managers, doctors, dental
surgeons, pharmacists, researchers and teachers.
The University is in partnership with many companies in order to give the students a chance

Space Science and Technology, a European Master’s in materials for energy storage and

History
With origins dating back to the eighteenth century, the University of Porto is currently one

The University of Split was officially established on 15 June 1974 when the units having
already had an effect in their professional, scientific and teaching areas entered its structure.
As a predominant scientific and teaching public institution in the region the University of Split
has expanded during the course of the past 30 years to include eleven Faculties, one
Academy of Arts and four University Departments.
There are about 24,000 students enrolled in the University’s undergraduate, graduate and
post-graduate programs.
The focus of the research work carried out by the University is on scientific areas with
reference to disciplines characterized by natural, biomedical, cultural, historical, social,
economic and other features of the region as a part of the Croatian Adriatic and the
Mediterranean region as a whole.
This involves the research and protection of art and construction heritage, philology,
field crops, oceanography and fishing, Adriatic botany and zoology, island and
coastal economy, Adriatic tourism, maritime law, nautical science, naval architecture
and a range of other specific disciplines such as chemical engineering, civil engineering,
architecture, electrical and mechanical engineering, social sciences, kinesiology,
humanities, health sciences, forensics, all of which distinguish the University of Split, not
only in Croatia but also beyond its borders.
