FARINGDON FUN TRAIL - Visit Southern Oxfordshire

FARINGDON
FUN TRAIL
Lord Berners lived in Faringdon House and built Folly Tower in 1935. He was an eccentric and did
lots of odd things; he enjoyed leaving notices around the town that served no real purpose, but
made everybody laugh. Even today, if you look carefully, you will be able to spot some of these
notices on shops and houses in Faringdon. We call them “Frivolously Unnecessary Notices”
just for “FUN”, and we have now made a FUN Trail giving you clues to help you find them.
Follow the trail around town and see if you can answer these questions!
1. Go to the dentists on Gloucester Street, look up on the side wall, you will see a sign.
What do you need to do regularly?

2. Now go on to the Nut Tree. Who will be sold to the circus?
___________________________________________________________________________
3. There is another sign at the top of the Bargain Centre. What’s gone missing here?
___________________________________________________________________________
4. Up the road a bit, you can find a sign at Sadlers. What service was offered here?
___________________________________________________________________________
5. You’ll see another sign at the Portwell Angel. What mustn’t you do here?
___________________________________________________________________________
6. Look around the corner at Camden house. What will make the road impassable?
___________________________________________________________________________
7. Across the road (and make sure you are with an adult when crossing) there is another
sign at the Marketplace Restaurant. What is wrong with this sign?
___________________________________________________________________________
8. Go around the corner and up the hill, to 23 London St. What have you been looking for?
___________________________________________________________________________
If you are visiting Folly Tower you may find another sign up there too.
For a bonus point… What mustn’t you feed?

Once you have completed the trail, hand it in at Berners’ Big Bench Bash on Saturday
September 27th at 12.00pm where we will be opening a new artwork in the town centre.
All entrants will be awarded a free gift and have a chance to enter a prize draw for cinema
tickets, and vouchers to spend in shops around Faringdon – good luck!
