Welcome to the Main Street Theater Spring 2015 production of Once Upon a Mattress!
Main Street is proud to present Loudoun County talent in community theater at the
highest production standards possible. We are looking for approximately 46 cast
members. Chorus starts at no younger than ninth grade, and all principle characters will
be of the age the script calls for. Example: Queen Aggravain will be an adult female old
enough to have at least a twenty year old son. We are looking for:

The ten principle roles, listed below;

Ten princesses/chorus girls, teenagers to young adult women;

Ten knights to be paired with the ten princesses (age appropriate);

Ten adult chorus women;

Six additional male chorus members;

Six children between the ages of ten years old through middle school, to appear in
two selected numbers only. Please do not audition if you are not at least ten years
old.
Rehearsals for this show will begin Monday, March 2, 2015. All cast can expect to be
called for rehearsal at least twice a week (principals more frequently). Children will be
called as needed to rehearse their numbers. There will be no rehearsal during Spring
Break (Mar. 28 – Apr. 6), and all school-related functions are excused (not during the
last two weeks before show), but please list them under “conflicts” on your audition
form.
Rehearsals are held weekday evenings between six and nine pm; we do not rehearse
on weekends. Please list all known conflicts on your audition form. When scheduling
rehearsals, we will take conflicts into account as best we can.
Main Street rehearses on a very tight and lean schedule. All principle roles do not have
more than one vocal rehearsal individually, and are expected to show up to rehearsals
already knowing their music. Scenes are blocked once and the second rehearsal is
expected to be off-book (memorized). The final two weeks of rehearsals (Apr. 13 – Apr.
23) are mandatory for all cast members; this is when we conduct run-throughs and
technical rehearsals.
The Principle Roles Character Descriptions
and Materials We Would Like to See at Auditions
Please note: If you are auditioning for a principle role, please show up ready to perform
this material, preferably memorized and with big character choices. YouTube is a
valuable resource, please take advantage.
1. Princess Winifred the Woe-Be-Gone: A feisty, quirky, outspoken, independent,
strong, optimistic, (did we leave any adjectives out?) and free-thinking princess
from the swamp lands. She isn’t too good with manners. She wants to get
married to Prince Dauntless the Drab, but must pass the queen's unfair test. The
Prince, naturally, falls madly in love with her. Winifred is about the same age as
Dauntless, perhaps a bit older, about 20 – 30.
What she sings in the show: Shy, The Swamps of Home, Happily Ever After.
What we want at the audition: Shy, measures 44-78.
What we want at the callback: Happily Ever After, Rapunzel verse.
Find music here.
2. Prince Dauntless the Drab: A nice, not too smart, everyday type of young
Prince who desperately wants to get married, but is prevented by the strict tests
his mother gives to all potential candidates. Dauntless is just old enough to get
married, about 16 – 25.
What he sings in the show: An Opening for a Princess, The Swamps of Home,
Song of Love, Man to Man Talk.
What we want at the audition: Song of Love (aka Fred).
What we want at the callback: Be prepared to do some readings opposite
potential Winifreds.
See lyrics here.

3. Lady Larken: The Queen’s Lady-in-Waiting who is put in charge of Princess
Winifred. She is madly in love with Sir Harry and desperately wants to marry him
because she is pregnant with his baby. She tries to flee the Kingdom after having
an argument with Sir Harry, but is convinced by Winifred to reunite with him.
Larken is about the same age as the Prince and Princess, perhaps a few years
older, about 16 – 35.
What she sings in the show: In a Little While, Normandy.
What we want at the audition: In a Little While.
What we want at the callback: Sing last verse of Normandy and be prepared to
do some readings opposite potential Harrys.
Find music here.
4. Sir Harry the Immaculate: The Queen’s Champion-in-Arms, the Lancelot of
Knights, the macho, slightly egotistical, brave, romantic knight who decides to
leave the kingdom to search for a princess, and finds Princess Winifred in the
swamp. He is easily jealous, but loves Lady Larken with all his heart. Harry
cannot marry Lady Larken until Prince Dauntless has found a suitable bride.
Harry is a few years older than Larken, about 20 – 40.
What he sings in the show: In a Little While, Normandy.
What we want at the audition: Normandy.
What we want at the callback: Be prepared to sing/read opposite potential Lady
Larkens.
Find music here.
5. Queen Aggravain: The loud, talkative woman who really rules the country. She
is an overprotective, stubborn, sly Mamma Bear who is trying to keep her son,
Prince Dauntless, from getting married. Aggravain is “of a certain age” to have
Dauntless as a son, about 40 – 60.
What she sings in the show: Sensitivity.
What we want at the audition: Sensitivity.
What we want at the callback: Be prepared to sing Sensitivity opposite
potential Wizards and to read part of Queen Aggravain’s page-long monologue.
Find music here.
6. The Wizard: The egotistical, ex-performer who directly serves the Queen. He is
the Queen’s Henchman and thinks of all the Princess’ tests. He prides himself on
his position and basically obeys all of the Queen’s orders. Suck-up is an
understatement. The Wizard should ideally be the Queen’s contemporary, but
could conceivably be any age, 18 and up.
What he sings in the show: Sensitivity.
What we want at the audition: Read his part in Sensitivity.
What we want at the callback: Be prepared to read opposite potential Queens.
Find music here.
7. The Minstrel: The handsome narrator of the story for the very good reason that
he witnessed the “true” story of the Princess and the Pea. The Minstrel is an
adult male.
What he sings in the show: Many Moons Ago.
What we want at the audition: Many Moons Ago.
What we want at the callback: Be prepared to read the beginning monologue
that opens the show.
See lyrics here.
Music is unavailable online - learn it through YouTube.
8. The Jester: An energetic and peppy man who is the King's right-hand man and
assists him with every endeavor. The Jester is an adult male.
What he sings in the show: N/A
What we want at the audition: Sing chorus requirements, listed below.
What we want at the callback: Be prepared to read opposite potential Kings
and Minstrels.
9. King Sextimus the Silent: A kind, expressive, playful, and comedic character
who is silent due to a curse placed upon him by a witch before the birth of
Dauntless. He likes to chase girls through the corridors of the castle. Needs good
improv skills. Sextimus is a few years older than Aggravain, about 45 – 65.
What he sings in the show: Man to Man Talk.
What we want at the audition: Be prepared to be asked to improv part of Man
to Man Talk.
What we want at the callback: Be prepared to act opposite potential
Dauntlesses, Minstrels, and Jesters.
See lyrics here.
10. The Nightengale of Samarkand: A royal pet that sings a lullaby to put Winifred
to sleep.
What she sings in the show: Lullaby.
What we want at the audition: Sing chorus requirements, listed below.
What we want at the callback: Be prepared to be sung through the
Nightengale’s song.
