to become an astronaut inspired her colorful drawing. Her winning picture depicted
an alien colony on Mars. Her father says, “Christie’s imagination keeps her thinking
outside the box, while her love for friends and relatives keeps her heart grounded.
This contest was a great way for her to put her thoughts into action while having a
lot of fun.”
9-year-old winner: Katie Jones
The winner for the 7- to 9-year-old category:
Katie Jones, 9 years old. Katie lives in Berwick,
Maine, with parents Monica and George, brother
Thomas and pet rabbit Pepper. She attends
Northeast Elementary School and dreams of
teaching or reporting news when she grows up. Katie’s coloring drawing of the
ultimate classroom deserved the win. Katie said, “I love school and I love the way my
teachers are always telling us kids to use our creative talents to make a difference. I
wanted to draw a classroom that would be the prefect place for kids to do that.”
Katie has always been a creative child. Her mother said, “ When Katie was just a
toddler, she used to line up her crayons from the 64 box in rows and pretend they
were her students. She always encouraged them to be creative.” She carried on her
desire to inspire others to her third grade classroom. Her teacher, Michael Enders
said, “Katie is a great student who loves working with her classmates and I expect

one day we will hear about her ‘teacher of the year’ award for inspiring creativity in
her students.”
12-year-old winner: Stephen Smith
The winner for the 10- to 12-year-old category: Stephen
Smith, 12 years old. Stephen lives in Littletown, Colo.,
with parents Joe and Susie, two sisters Janet and Josie, pet
Beagle Max and Lizard Lou. He attends Littlestown
Middle School where he enjoys learning math and art. His
drawing of a new rendition of the Twin Towers expresses his desire to become an
architect. Stephen said, “Ever since I heard about September 11, I wanted to do
something to remember those people who died, and to honor the heroes who died
trying to save them. When I heard about this contest, I knew I had my chance.” His
art teacher Celeste Schwab said, “Stephen has always had a creative streak in him.
The Crayola contest gave him, and thousands of other children, the opportunity to
give expression to his feelings while using his talents.” His mother described
Stephen as a very focused individual who loves his friends, but really appreciates
being alone to unwind after a long day of classes. She said, “Stephen used to come
home from school and go straight to his room to do Crayola therapy. Crayola
provided the perfect medium for him to be able to do that.”
