Living Cultures & Manchester Gallery - KS3
(Booking Essential)
This activity uses observational enquiry skills to identify and record religious artefacts from
around the world.
The Living Cultures gallery on floor one explores the anthropological material culture from
around the world. The collection is mainly from areas outside Europe, namely Asia, Africa,
the Americas and Oceania.
Print out the worksheet provided for individual students in order to encourage an
understanding of the variety of culture and diversity of differing beliefs in the world
Below is a guide for how to use this resource in a 30 minute activity:
1. Allow students approximately 7 minutes to look around the galleries prior to providing
the task in order to find areas of interest and to allow them to get their bearings
2. Hand out the attached sheet and instruct students to sketch and record information on
three artefacts linked to religion on the gallery. Allow approximately 5 minutes for
students to record each object
3. If time, allow some students to share information about their favourite object and how
it is linked to a culture’s religious beliefs
Materials required for activity (not provided):
Resource sheets (print out as required)
Pencils
Clipboards
Post-visit suggestion:
Use the sheets created by students back in the classroom to discuss religious beliefs, or create your own map
showing where the objects recorded by all students were from.
