Description:
Animal Science develops basic knowledge and skills pertaining to livestock identification, selection, nutrition,
reproduction and genetics, health management, and marketing of farm animals commonly produced in
Kentucky. The latest production technologies, as well as, biotechnological applications will be included.
Leadership development will be provided through FFA. Each student will be expected to have a supervised
agricultural experience program.
Course Standards:
Students will:
1. Demonstrate employability and social skills relative to a career in animal sciences
2. Connect the benefits of animal agriculture to human kind; locally, nationally, and globally
3. Interpret proper animal science terminology and terminology of the food animal industry
4. Differentiate the common food animal species and their specific breeds
5. Select & evaluate food animal livestock species according to current industry standards
6. Apply principles of reproduction to food animal production.
7. Apply principles of digestion to food animal production
8. Formulate livestock feeding programs that meet nutritional requirements
9. Identify common animal health problems & synthesize their prevention/solution
10. Investigate biotechnology principles in relation to the livestock industry
11. Analysis the effect of animal agriculture and the environment
12. Maintain records on a supervised agricultural experience program & be able to summarize/analysis results for
making financial decisions
13. Utilize activities of FFA as an integral component of course content and leadership development
Materials:
 Students will need a 3-ring binder. This should contain all assignments, notes, handouts, and other
materials relating to this class. This binder needs to be at least 1”. Binders will be graded! Students
should keep them organized.
 Each student is expected to bring the following items to class everyday:
a.
Writing utensil (pencils and pens-blue or black ink only!)
b.
Paper (lined notebook paper)
Grading:
All grades will be based on a point value. The following will make up the grade in class.
 Test and Quizzes (point value will vary)
 Daily participation
 Homework grades
 Projects
Daily Work: Includes any assignment that is completed on a daily basis. It may include: homework, taking
notes, completing worksheets, viewing videos, participating in class discussions, daily questions, lab work,
notebook checks, SAE, etc. Students get 10 points a week for completing their Bell Ringers (2 points per
day)!! If you are absent, ask a friend for the Bell Ringer. Do NOT simply write absent!
Notebook: Every student will be required to compile a notebook in this class. We will use these notebooks on
a day to day basis and they will be your study guide for tests. Your notebook grade will be obtained two ways
(1) we will have pop notebook quizzes throughout the semester, (2) I will grade your notebook following the
Notebook Grading Rubric that I will provide to you. The value of notebook checks will be based on the number
of items I am checking for on that particular day. For example, if I am checking for 5 items it will be a 50 point
grade (10 points per item).
Every student is required to have an SAE project and will be required to keep records throughout the year to
report, and present a final presentation on their SAE at the end of the year.
Expectations & Rules:
1. Students are expected to follow all rules and procedures set forth by the district and school according
to dress, behavior, participation, and grading policy.
2. Attendance – Be here on time each day prepared to work.
If you are absent it is your responsibility to check the “While You Were Out” binder for any
work and assignments that you missed!
** Make-up work policy- If you are absent, you have the amount of days you were absent plus one to
turn in missed work before it is considered late. You will NOT receive full credit for late assignments.
3. Respect – Use appropriate language, be honest and truthful, and be respectful of peers and adults.
4. Safety – Follow all safety rules and procedures; keep work area orderly, clean-up work stations daily.
5. Responsibility – Complete work on time, follow directions, use resources to answer questions, ask for
help when needed, and contribute to class discussions.
6. Team Work – Work as a productive team member in a variety of roles, and communicate in a sensitive
way.
7. Cell Phones – Phones are NOT to be out in class!!
8. You WILL have fun in this class!!

FFA Dues:
FFA is the career and technical student organization available to students enrolled in agricultural education
programs. The activities of the organization are an integral part of the instructional programs. All students
enrolled in an agricultural education program are encouraged to become members of the FFA and take
advantage of the leadership, citizenship, and personal development training and experience offered through
participation in the FFA program. FFA dues are $15 and cover local, regional, state, and national dues. These
dues are due by September 18th. Students will have the option to purchase a chapter t-shirt.
