natural resource [NACH•er•uhl REE•sawrs] something that comes
from nature that people use
Resource contains the word source. A source is the place where
something begins. Resources are sources of materials needed for
making things, such as soap and paper.
nonrenewable resource [nahn•rih•NOO•uh•buhl REE•sawrs] a natural
resource that can be used up
Nonrenewable has four parts: non- re- -new- -able.
Nonrenewable and not begin the same way. A nonrenewable
resource is not renewable.
renewable resource [rih•NOO•uh•buhl REE•sawrs] a resource that
can be replaced easily
Renewable has three parts: re- -new- -able.
Renew and redo begin the same way. When you redo something,
you do it again. A renewable resource is a resource that can be
made new again.

What Are Some Natural Resources?
fossil fuel [FAHS•uhl FYOO•uhl] fuel that forms over many years
from the remains of once-living things
You know that a fossil is something that forms over a very long
period of time. A fossil fuel is a fuel that forms from fossils.
conservation [kahn•ser•VAY•shuhn] saving resources by using them
wisely
If you were in a desert, you would want to make your water last as
long as possible. To do that, you would be careful not to spill it.
You would use it wisely. You would conserve it.
Conservation and conserve are in the same word family.
Conservation is conserving our natural resources so they last as
long as possible.
pollution [puh•LOO•shyhn] harmful substances in the environment
Pollution and poison begin with the same sound. Pollution
poisons the environment by making it harmful to living things.
