ERC Starting Grant DynaMO (2014-2019)
Experimental Soft Matter, Colloidal Science
A PhD position is offered to a motivated candidate with background in the field of colloidal science
and particle synthesis in the Faculty of Physics at the University of Barcelona, Spain (Dr. Pietro
Tierno).
The position will be associated with a recently funded project form the European Research Council,
titled “DynaMO: Dynamics and assemblies of colloidal particles under Magnetic and Optical forces”
The Project’s goal is to power a series of experimental research lines based on the combined use of
magnetic and optical forces and targeting transport and organization of colloidal matter under near
and out of equilibrium conditions, addressing both fundamental and applied issues in the field.
The candidate will be involved in the synthesis of novel colloidal particles with anisotropic shape or
magnetic patchy colloids. These particles will be used to explore self-assembly scenarios driven by
magnetic fields.
Starting Date: March-May of 2014
Eligibility : the candidate must hold a MSC in Chemistry, Physics or Chemical Engineering with some
previous experience in wet chemistry lab. Experience in magnetic colloids will be valuable but is not
compulsory.
Duration : 3-4 years.
