ERC Starting Grant DynaMO (2014-2019)
Experimental Soft Condensed Matter Physics, Optical tweezers
A Postdoctoral position is offered to a motivated candidate with suitable background in the field of
Optics, Laser Tweezers and Optical manipulation of microscopic objects, in the Faculty of Physics at
the University of Barcelona, Spain (PI: Dr. Pietro Tierno).
The position will be associated with a recently funded project form the European Research Council,
titled “DynaMO: Dynamics and assemblies of colloidal particles under Magnetic and Optical forces”
The Project’s goal is to power a series of experimental research lines based on the combined use of
magnetic and optical forces and targeting transport and organization of colloidal matter under near
and out of equilibrium conditions, addressing both fundamental and applied issues in the field.
The candidate will be involved in the development of state-of the-art laser tweezers set-up
incorporating Holographic Optical Tweezers and/or Acousto-Optic-Deflectors with ferromagnetic
thin film (Garnet Films). The set-up will be used to explore collective phenomena in driven colloidal
systems under combine magnetic and optical forces.
Starting Date : Beginning (February-March) of 2014 (Negotiable)
Eligibility : Candidates must hold a PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry or Engineering with previous
experience in optics, laser systems (optical tweezers) and colloidal system. Experience in Magnetic
manipulation will be valuable but it is not compulsory.
Duration : minimum 1, extendible up to 3 years.
Salary : The net salary will depends on expertise. Funding will be available to cover participation to
conferences/workshops.
