8.5 Tail wind and current problems
1.) A motorboat took 3 hours to make a downstream trip with a current of 6 km/h. The return trip
against the same current took 5 hours. Find the speed of the boat in still water.
2.) An airplane flew for 5 hours with a tail wind of 25 km/h. The return trip against the same wind took
6 hours. Find the speed of the airplane in still air.
3.) A fishing boat traveled 3 hours against a 6km/hr current. The return trip took only 2 hours. Find the
speed of the boat in still water.
4.) An airplane flew for 3 hours with a tail wind of 40 km/hr. The return flight against the same wind
took 4 hours. Find the speed of the airplane in still air.
5.) An airplane flew for 6 hours with a tail wind of 60 km/hr. The return flight against the same wind
took 8 hours. Find the speed of the airplane in still air.
6.) The speed of a stream is 3 km/hr. A boat travels 4 km upstream in the same time it takes to travel
10 km downstream. What is the speed of the boat in still water?
