Mr. Van Scoyoc

Grading Policy

Exploratory French

Tests and quizzes will account for approximately 40% of your course grade. Tests will evaluate oral comprehension and written proficiency. If you have been paying attention and participating in class, and doing your homework regularly, you should do well on exams.

Homework and classroom assignments account for approximately 50% of the final grade.

Learning a language, like any skill, requires regular practice. Expect to have homework almost every night. It may include review of what was covered in class that day, a written activity from the text, or worksheets. Students should study their French at least 10 minutes every night.

Homework will be checked and generally graded for completeness rather than for accuracy.

Homework is due at the beginning of the next class period after it is assigned. Students who are absent are responsible for submitting previously assigned homework within a day of returning to class and for getting details of assignments they have missed. Late homework will not be accepted.

Participation will account for 10% of the final grade. You are expected to participate in class every day. Participation includes keeping organized and thorough class notes, being on task and contributing to pair and group practice exercises in class, and using French whenever possible in normal classroom routine.

Bonus points, extra credit work, etc , will be given at my discretion. No extra credit will be given to students who have not completed assigned work.

Required materials:

You will be required to have a folder in which to keep class notes, handouts, assignments, and projects. You are expected to bring your French materials to class each day. I will periodically check your folder for completeness and organization as part of your participation grade.

Make-up work:

If you miss class, it is your responsibility to see me your first day back to find out what material was covered and to get details on assignments you missed. I will not seek you out to remind you of missing work. Note the school policy on time limits for making up work, found on page 10 of the

Student and Parent Handbook. Late make-up work will not be accepted unless extenuating circumstances apply.

Classroom Rules

Mr. Van Scoyoc

1. Be on time. Students who arrive late to class will receive a disciplinary check, and after three times they will be given After School Detention (ASD). If the problem persists, a meeting with Mr.

Wagner will be scheduled.

2. Be in your seat and ready to work at the start of class. You should be prepared with your required course materials and a pencil or pen. If you are unprepared for class, you will receive a disciplinary check. If the problem occurs three times, you will be assigned After School Detention, and your parents will be informed.

3. Be on task. Pay attention when I am teaching and when other students are speaking. Talking, writing notes, doing other work, etc. is not permitted. When we are doing practice exercises in pairs or in groups, be focused on the exercise and actively participating. All purses, bags, books and materials from other classes are to be placed under your desk.

4. Homework is a requirement for the course. If you do not have your homework completed at the start of the class period it is due, you will receive a zero. If it happens a second time, you will be given a disciplinary check, and after three times, you will be assigned one night of ASD, and your parents will be notified.

5. Do your own work. Students found cheating will receive a zero for the assignment or evaluation, and the office and their parents will be notified. More severe or repeat infractions will result in additional consequences. Examples of cheating are copying another student’s answers, using cheat sheets, getting answers via electronic devices, and using an on-line translator to render text in

French. Students who provide answers or allow other students to copy their work are equally guilty of cheating.

6. Students are responsible for making up work if they miss class. It is your responsibility to see me the first day you are back in class to get details of material covered and assignments you have missed. Students will have as many days as they were absent to make up missing work.

7. Do not interrupt instructional time to ask to use your Lavatory/Locker pass unless it is a dire emergency.

8. Respect others’ space and property. Harassment, bullying, or any kind of intimidation is prohibited. Do not hesitate to report any incident of this kind if you are a victim or a witness of such behaviors.

9. Use good manners and appropriate language. Insults, profanity, or disrespectful talk will not be tolerated. You will be given detention, with notification to your parents and to Mr. Wagner, depending on the seriousness of the offense.

Usual procedure of disciplinary actions:

1. Verbal warning

2. Assignment of disciplinary checks.

3. Assignment of After School Detention and contact with parents or guardians.

4. Conference with Mr. Wagner for further disciplinary action
