Martin Basaldua, M.D.
Dr. Martin Basaldua is a native Texan and has been a community leader in Harris County for more than 30
years.
Dr. Basaldua was elected to the Board of Trustees of the North Harris Montgomery Community College
District (NHMCCD) in 1991. During his six-year tenure, he served as Vice Chair and as Secretary. In January
of 1997, Governor George W. Bush appointed him to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
(THECB), where he served for seven years, most of his term as Vice Chair. He served as Chair of the THECB
Committee which drafted the landmark “Closing the Gaps by 2015” report. He has also served on the Lone
Star College System Foundation Board. Dr. Basaldua's involvement in his community and his leadership
within the medical field led to another appointment by Governor Bush in October 1997 when he was
named to the Strategic Economic Development Planning Commission. In 2003, Governor Perry appointed
him to the Senate Joint Interim Committee on Higher Education.
Dr. Basaldua's support of his local community is demonstrated through his leadership roles in numerous
activities with civic groups in the Kingwood area. He was the founder of the Northeast Harris County
Division of the American Heart Association where he served as president and director. He has served as
director of FamilyTime Foundation (a local women's shelter) as well as director of the Kingwood Families
in Action. He is a member of the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce and the Kingwood Chamber of
Commerce. He is currently serving on the board of The North Houston Association and the board of Lake
Houston TIRZ (#10)/Lake Houston Redevelopment Authority.
He is also active in several professional organizations, including the Harris County Medical Society, the
American Medical Association, the American Society of Physicians Executives and the Texas Medical
Association. He serves as Chairman of Merit, IPA, a regional physicians' organization. Dr. Basaldua serves
on the board of Renaissance Physicians Organization.
Martin served in the U.S. Army from 1970-1976, of which two years were on Active Duty.
Basaldua received his Associates degree from San Antonio College, his Bachelors degree from Trinity
University, San Antonio, his Medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center, San
Antonio, completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center,
Houston and is board certified in Family Medicine since 1984. He established his private practice in 1985
and co-founded Kingwood Plaza Hospital, now Kingwood Medical Center, in 1986. He was selected to
Best Doctors in America 2007- present.
