Program Guidelines:

CTCR Cancer Research Support Initiatives

1. Overview: The Centre for Translational Cancer Research (CTCR) strives to: 1. connect multi-disciplinary cancer researchers, 2. foster and enhance collaboration and enable citywide high impact translational cancer research teams, 3. advocate for resources to support citywide translational cancer research and 4. promote translational cancer research to our partner institutions and the public.

In order to support the development of “important cancer questions”, the CTCR would like to engage citywide basic, translational and clinical cancer researchers with an opportunity to provide funding for initiatives to stimulate ideas that will:

strengthen existing translational teams,

 “launch” a new translational cancer research team,

develop new cancer research ideas

identify targets for large collaborative funding applications.

Cancer Research Support Initiatives applications are to support and develop teams and research ideas that are:

Interdisciplinary

Transformative

Enhance and complement cancer research that is unique to London

Leverage resources, infrastructure and investments that exist in London

Internationally competitive

Serve as a preparatory step to a major grant application that will escalate cancer research in London.

The grant is not intended to fund a research project.

2. Purpose: The program will promote and enhance research collaboration of existing translational cancer research teams and will identify and foster emerging translational cancer research teams or ideas.

3. Submission Guidelines: (maximum 2 pages)

Outline how the initiative will either strengthen existing translational cancer research teams or help create new cancer research teams in pursuing new translational research directions that align with the vision of the CTCR. Please provide background details about how this initiative builds upon previous work and include clear goals and milestones.

Proposals must provide clear details as to how the initiative will support a longer term goal of peer reviewed team grant applications to external funding agencies (e.g. CCSRI

Innovation Grant, CIHR Foundation, Genome Canada, OICR, Terry Fox Foundation).

A description of the research team and the competencies that the team members bring to the application. Describe synergies and collaboration between the applicants.

A one page CV for each of the Applicants and Co-applicants e.g. NIH biosketch.

4. Budget Justification (1 page):

Clearly outline each budget item and a detailed explanation of cost. If applicable, quotations for expenditures are to be provided. Letters of support will be accepted.

5. Eligibility:

At least 1 applicant must be a primary or cross-appointed faculty member of the

Department of Oncology and/or a member of CTCR. Applicants are encouraged from citywide research sites including: London Regional Cancer Program, London Health

Sciences Centre (Vic & UH), St. Joseph’s Health Care London and Western University.

Researchers from outside of the CTCR and the Department of Oncology may be collaborators on an application.

A co-applicant model with a clinical and basic/translational researcher partnership is encouraged.

A broad range of requests are eligible for support for teams and include capacity building, workshops or retreats to develop a translational cancer research team or concept or foster understanding and capacity around emerging technologies and platforms. Workshops and capacity building activities are intended to be multidisciplinary. Evidence of value and outcomes must be provided. Support for travel for external researchers as visiting speakers will be considered.

The grant is not intended to fund a research project.

6. Ineligible Expenses

Equipment for a program of research

Operating funds for programs of research

Researcher salaries

Graduate student stipends

Summer student stipends.

7. Assessment: The Cancer Research Initiatives grant will be awarded based upon a competitive review process conducted by the Centre for Translational Cancer Research

Management Committee. The Committee will fund up to $10,000 per application for the period of one year. The number of awards granted and the amount per award is dependent upon the quality of the applications received. The applications will be adjudicated by a panel convened by the Centre for Translational Cancer Research Management Committee including representatives from the Schulich Research Office and Lawson Health Research

Institute.

8. Progress Reports: A one page report to the CTCR Management Committee will be required at the completion of the term of the grant award. All final reports must be submitted before a new application will be considered.

Applications will be accepted once per year.

9. Questions: Any questions should be directed to Sandra Kleinstiver at the Centre for

Translational Cancer Research, sandra.kleinstiver@lhsc.on.ca

or ext 53550.
