New Curbside Recycling and Garbage Program
Launches in Central Newfoundland
Mandatory use of transparent blue recycling bags and clear garbage bags
to help increase waste diversion
Norris Arm, NL (Wednesday, February 4, 2015) – Central Newfoundland Waste Management
(CNWM) is pleased to announce Sort It - Central, a new curbside recycling and garbage
program that will launch on Monday, March 2, 2015. With a focus on increasing waste
diversion and protecting the environment, the program requires everyone to properly sort
their waste into two streams, using clear bags for garbage and transparent blue bags for
recyclables, including mixed containers and paper fibre.
“Sorting waste as part of our daily lives is an important step in achieving sustainable waste
management and fostering a culture of environmental change that will protect our province
for generations to come,” said Allan Scott, Chair of Central Newfoundland Waste
Management. “The launch of Central Newfoundland Waste Management’s new curbside
recycling and garbage program is a positive step forward as we work towards achieving our
goal to divert 50 per cent of our waste from landfill.”
Public education is critical to the success of the Sort It - Central program and CNWM will work
with residents, industry, businesses and institutions to ensure that everyone has the
opportunity to learn how to sort their recyclables from their garbage and implement
appropriate waste diversion infrastructure, where required.
“Residents and businesses have been participating in existing waste diversion programs in
Central Newfoundland for many years, and we know they are looking forward to this new
service that will allow them to do more to better manage their waste,” said Scott. “With the
launch of Sort It - Central, we understand there will be a period of transition as everyone
learns to sort their waste, and we look forward to their continued co-operation in making this
a successful program and ensuring our environment is protected for future generations."
