BURMAN INFANT SCHOOL
AUTUMN NEWSLETTER 2015
A warm welcome back to school. We are delighted that the children have made such a calm,
happy start to the term. A special welcome to all new children and families. The children
are looking very smart in their Burman uniforms, please ensure all items are clearly named
to avoid loss or confusion. Please ensure that the children have their book bags and Year 1
and Year 2 children bring Reading books and diaries every day. We have an extra focus on
Reading this year. Please try and read with your child at home as often as possible and
record this in their diary.  Don’t forget to encourage them to ‘colour an owl’ each time
they read!
Medicines in School
Please inform school immediately of any medical conditions or allergies your child has and
the appropriate actions. If your child needs an inhaler in school please complete a form at
the school office and inform your child’s class teacher. In line with medical advice, inhalers
are kept in class at all times.
Please ensure that any inhalers and medical information is updated regularly.
OUT OF DATE INHALERS MUST BE REPLACED.
Attendance and Absence from school
Following a change in legislation in relation to school absence we are advised that it will no
longer be lawful for pupils to be granted holidays from school during school term time,
Headteachers are NOT able to grant permission for any leave of absence except IN VERY
RARE CASES, for EXTREME circumstances but this will NOT include holidays.
Any parents with an exceptional request will need to make an appointment with Mrs Carter
and complete a written request form. Children’s academic and social development is
severely affected if they miss vital days where work cannot be repeated.
Year 2 children should attend everyday possible in MAY and JUNE as we undertake key
assessments at this time. We appreciate your support in this matter.
Beechwood Wraparound
We are delighted that we are able to offer on-site wraparound with Beechwood Childcare
for Nursery children. The children are settling well and enjoying playing in the children’s
room in our Children’s Centre. Please telephone 0121 745 8495 for further information
Parking
Please park carefully around school and please NOT in the staff car park at any time,
including Nursery picking up time at 11.45am or dropping off at 12.30pm.
Thank you to all those parents who respect this rule. It also applies to taxis, or other family
members visiting school occasionally.
Nursery Open Afternoon/Reception Open Day
Nursery Open Afternoon
On Friday 9th October - 1.30 - 3.00pm prospective Nursery parents are welcome to visit
with their children (September 2016 intake children aged 3 before 31st August 2016).
Please let your friends and family know, they are very welcome to visit with their children.
At 3.00pm parents will be invited to visit the Wraparound room in our Children’s Centre.
Nursery sessions will run as normal. We also have a few afternoon places available in our
current Nursery class. Please contact us if interested.
Reception Open Day
Reception Open Day is on Thursday 12th November from 9.00am - 10.00am or 2.15pm 3.15pm
School Fund
Each class has a ‘piggy bank’ for voluntary contributions of £1 per week per child to be
brought in each Monday. Alternatively, parents may wish to pay termly approximately £15
per term per child or an annual contribution of approximately £40 per year per child. These
make a huge difference to school, to support trips, visits and fun activities for all children
COATS
Please ensure that children have a sweatshirt, cardigan or fleece and a coat for outdoor play
every day. This ensures they are prepared for any eventuality, with ever changing weather
conditions. Please name all items in school. Reversable Burman coats have a name label
attached inside the pocket. Thank you.
Birthday Sweets
We continue to support the tradition of bringing class treats into school to celebrate a
birthday. However, we do ask that the treat is chocolate and does not contain NUTS. (NOT
Haribos please) Increasing numbers of children have allergies to colourings, additives or
nuts. Lollies and hard sweets present a choking hazard for young children. We have a
policy of handing treats out at the end of the school day and put them into children’s book
bags to be eaten at home. We appreciate your support in putting the children’s safety first.
Thank you
School Safety
When picking up/dropping off Nursery children please follow the red line at the edge of the
playground in order to keep the children safe in main school. Please ensure that the gate in
the Nursery play area is closed at all times to protect the children. We also ask that children
refrain from playing on the equipment and activities before school, or around the trees
where they cannot be seen.
Parent Pay
We offer free school meals throughout school (from Reception  Year 2) and parents can
view their child’s choice each day on ‘Parent Pay’. School fund contributions can also be
made through Parent Pay
Mobile Phones
Please note that as an Early Years setting, we are a ‘Mobile free site’ and request that
phones are not used in or around the building for the children’s safety.
