Earth Science Volcanism Portfolio Project
Haspela 2015
Part 1: Zones of volcanism
Define and diagram the 3 zones of volcanism.
Thought question:
List an example of each zone of volcanism (i.e., divergent zone = East African Rift valley)
Part 2: Volcano types
-Draw a triple venn diagram comparing and contrasting cinder cones, shield volcanoes, and stratovolcanoes.
Include at least 2 points on how each volcano type is unique and as many similarities as you can.
-Give an example of each volcano type. (not the same as in your class notes)
Part 3: Anatomy and Hazards
-Diagram the parts of a volcano. (ash, magma chamber, lava, vent, crater, tephra, lava dome, pyroclastic flow)
-Define 2 of the hazards.
Thought questions:
Create a scale to judge Mt. Hood’s volcanic threat. Explain.
Identify the biggest hazard for people living in Hood River county.
Part 4: Magma Types
-Identify and describe the different magma types. Don’t just copy notes onto your paper. Rewrite in a different format (i.e., chart) to
show you’ve processed this information.
Thought question: Predict the magma type which would be present at the Hawaii Volcanoes, Mt. Hood, and an Icelandic Volcano.
Part 5: Hot Spots and the Hawaii Island Chain
1.
2.
3.
Explain how hot spot volcanoes form.
Draw a diagram of the Hawaiian Islands and the movement of the Pacific
plate.
Identify the islands and include their ages.
Thought question: Draw the next Hawaiian island and predict when it will be
formed.
Part 6: Mount St. Helen’s and Mt. Hood
-Draw a diagram of Mt. St Helen’s before and after the 1980 eruption. In the after diagram, include
the dimensions of the crater.
-Complete a venn diagram comparing and contrasting Mt. St Helen’s and Mt. Hood’s explosive
history and geology. Include at least 3 points about how Mt. St Helen’s is unique, 3 points about how
Mt. Hood is unique, and 3 similarities.
Grading: Project is worth 30 points total: (Parts 1-6 are worth 5 points each.) See backside for grading form.
