REQUIRED TEXTBOOK & SUPPLIES:
Textbook: This will be provided to you on the first day of lab. It will also be
available on ANGEL.
Required Supplies:
1. You will need a scientific calculator for this course to use on labs and quizzes. Students
are only allowed to use basic scientific calculators (any of the TI 30s series for example)
for quizzes. No graphing calculators are allowed for quizzes! The instructor reserves
the right of approval for any calculator.
2. Safety goggles (NOT glasses), approved for use in chemical laboratories. (American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z-87.1-1989). Safety goggles must be worn at all
times during lab.
3. An apron or laboratory coat and rubber gloves are recommended. Do NOT wear your
best clothes to chemistry lab!
1
4. Shoes that cover the ENTIRE foot are required. Any student not wearing appropriate
shoes will not be admitted to the lab. It is suggested that you keep an appropriate pair of
shoes in your car.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS & INFORMATION FOR THE LABORATORY:
1. Read the introductory material pertaining to each experiment prior to the scheduled lab.
Complete the pre-lab assignment for each experiment in ANGEL prior to midnight the
night before that lab meeting. The pre-labs will consist of questions pertaining to the
introduction written for that experiment. Lab reports, which include your data and postlab questions, are to be handed in before you leave lab.
2. You will be assigned a lab partner the first day of lab. No more than two people are to
work together at one time unless I approve it. All calculations, conclusions, and other
report answers are to be done independently of your partner or anyone else. Students
MAY NOT SHARE answers, conclusions, or results.
3. You may leave the lab when you have finished with the experiment, cleaned all used
glassware and your area and when you have completed any calculations that I require.
Most reagents will need to be disposed of in specially marked containers located in the
fume hood. Please ask if you are not sure. DO NOT put any solid materials in the sinks.
Do not dispose of any solutions or liquids into the sink unless the instructor approves.
Please inform me of all spills immediately.
4. Replace caps / lids on all containers immediately after dispensing. Do not mix spatulas,
droppers or any other dispensing items. When using dropper bottles, use proper
technique for dispensing the solution into your test tube. Do not allow the dropper to
touch your test tube! Doing so will contaminate the solutions.
5. Cellular phones will not be permitted in class unless the ringer is turned OFF!
6. Students are expected to follow all safety requirements as outlined in the safety sheet they
will sign. Any violation of the safety requirements will result in the student not being
allowed to participate in the lab or ejection from the laboratory.
7. For students violating any of the ethics policies a record of the violation will be kept and
penalties affecting the grade may be taken. This could include being assigned a WF for
the course. Ethical violations include cheating on tests or quizzes, and not returning tests
or quizzes to the instructor when asked to do so.
ATTENDANCE:
The instructor will verify that students are in attendance at least once each week during the first
two weeks of class. Students classified as “No Show” for both of the first two weeks will be
administratively withdrawn. Active participation includes class attendance, homework, quizzes,
and exams. A student who misses three or more consecutive classes and/or any one quiz or
exam, without communicating with the instructor concerning the absences, will be considered to
be not actively participating in class. Immediately following the 60% point of the term, the
instructor will verify which students are actively participating in class. Students classified as not
meeting the criteria for active class participation will be administratively withdrawn at that time
with a “WF”. Students will be able to withdraw themselves at any time during the term, however,
requests submitted after the 60% deadline will result in a “WF”.
The college-wide attendance policy is included in the Syllabus Addendum located at the
following URL http://www.spcollege.edu/webcentral/policies.htm. The policy notes that each
instructor is to exercise professional judgment and define “active participation” in class, and
publish that definition in each syllabus. For this class, active participation is defined as noted
above.

TESTING/GRADING POLICY:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Each week you will turn in data, calculations and a post-lab assignment. This
will count as your weekly lab report. If you miss a lab, you will receive a zero
for that lab report grade. Lab reports cannot be made up. Your one lowest lab
report grade will be dropped. Your overall lab report average will count for
60% of your overall grade.
The final exam (a lab practical) scheduled for the last day of lab will count for
20% of your overall grade. If you miss the lab final, you will receive a zero for
that grade.
A pre-lab assignment will be available in ANGEL for each lab experiment until
midnight the night before lab meets. Your one lowest pre-lab score will be
dropped. Your average over the remaining pre-labs will count for 10% of your
overall grade.
Some lab periods will start with unannounced quizzes. Be prepared each week
for a quiz. Your one lowest quiz score will be dropped. Your average over the
remaining quizzes will count for 10% of your overall grade.
10% may be deducted from each lab report score for failure to follow
experimental procedures and safety rules. Always wear your goggles and clean
up your glassware and station when you have finished with your experiment.
To summarize your overall grade will be calculated as follows:

A letter grade for the course will be assigned based on the following:
90-100%=A,
80-89%=B,
70-79%=C,
60-69%=D,
