Context
Conditions
You are a chemist employed at Cairns Water and you have been
asked to separate out the mixtures in some contaminated water.
Your job is to use the different methods that you have used in class to
separate the substances from the water. You then need to write a
scientific report about your experiment.
Individual task; group prac work; work in class and also work in
own time.
Task Description
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
You will work as a group to plan and conduct the experiment
In the table provided in this task sheet, write the weight of the substances before you do the separation. After the separation, weigh the
substances again and write it in the same table.
Write your own prac report on the separation process that includes the aim, materials, procedure, results and discussion.
Present all data sheets for recording results (your table and graph)
Explain all changes in the amounts retrieved compared to what you started with.
Evaluate the procedure you used and make suggestions on how to improve the yield (that is the amount that you separated).
Submit this assignment booklet as your handwritten good copy.

reasons for both ‘how’ & ‘why’ things are as they are.
