British Columbia Rapid Transit Company Ltd. (BCRTC) maintains and operates two of Metro Vancouver’s
three SkyTrain lines on behalf of TransLink, the regional transportation authority. Launched in 1986,
SkyTrain is the first and one of the longest, fully-automated, driverless, rapid transit systems in the
world. It boasts an average on-time service performance rating of 95 per cent and moves on average
250,000 passengers per weekday.
Responsibilities
Manages the maintenance activities of the SkyTrain guideway and power systems and their associated
elements to ensure safe, efficient and cost effective services.
Key Accountabilities
Directs the Power and Guideway Departments and oversees all associated facilities, maintenance
support vehicles, and systems, ensuring compliance with established rules and regulations.
Develops and implements specifications, policies, procedures and programs, relating to the scheduled
and unscheduled maintenance, repair and new installations of all facilities related to the Guideway and
Power system.
Develops reviews and approves emergency response procedures to ensure maximum effectiveness in
emergency situations.
Manages associated contracted services provided by external sources as required. Monitors compliance
of work with legislation and regulations, organizational standards, safe work practices and contract
requirements.
Oversees departmental performance and ensures all work meets compliance with Corporate,
departmental, safety and other regulating policies, codes and standards.
Oversees the weekly Wayside Maintenance Planning meeting to:
-Ensure scheduled guideway maintenance and priorities for guideway access are established
-Coordinate activities and maintain communications levels necessary to resolve problems and facilitate
work in a timely manner
Manages a team of direct reports including selection, training, development, coaching, performance
management and all other people management practices. Participates in the collective bargaining and
grievance processes when applicable.
Prepares departmental operating budget, monitors and reports on financial performance of the
department.
Participates in the departmental planning and policy development and prepares a business plan for
inclusion in the Corporate business plan. Establishes and implements performance objectives to meet
the business plan.
Participates in various committees and meetings and performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
The requirements for this job are typically acquired through a trades qualification in commercial
transport vehicle mechanics/electronics, electrical or related discipline, and 5 years of related
experience at progressive levels of responsibility, including leading a Guideway maintenance area within
the transit industry.
Other Requirements:
-Solid knowledge of the concepts, principles, practices and techniques pertaining to facilities
maintenance within the transit industry
-Solid knowledge of emergency response planning and services
-Good planning and organizational skills to develop strategies and plans for facilities maintenance, with
particular emphasis on operational and resource planning to optimize service and control cost.
-Solid interpersonal skills to provide expertise and advice to BCRTC management and to represent
BCRTC on internal/external committees and stakeholder meetings
