What is the TKT test?
Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a test that focuses on the teaching knowledge needed by teachers of
primary, secondary or adult learners of English, anywhere in the world. It can increase your confidence and
enhance your job prospects.
When can I take the test?
TKT is an ‘on demand’ test so can be taken on any day. However, Melton College needs at least 3 week’s
notice to make entries to Cambridge and order exam materials.
What does the exam consist of?
TKT is divided into separate modules. You can take them all, or just choose the ones that meet your needs.
You have total flexibility in how and when you take the modules and receive a certificate for each one
completed.
Modules:




Module 1 – Background to language teaching
Module 2 – Planning for language teaching
Module 3 – Classroom management
Practical – Assessment of teaching competence (not offered by Melton College at present)
How long does the exam take?
Modules 1, 2 and 3 of TKT are paper based and each paper is 1 hour and 20 minutes. All three modules
would be completed on the same day. The practical assessment would be completed on a separate day and
this would be organised for you by the centre.
How much does the exam cost?
The fee for each module is £45.00.

Will I be able to take the test on the date I choose?
Melton College will try to offer you the test date you want, however if this is not possible, we will contact
you to discuss alternative dates.
Will my exam be cancelled if you do not receive enough entries?
There is no minimum entry requirement for TKT.
Can you tell me more about each module?
Module 1 –
This module tests your knowledge of the terms and concepts common in English language teaching. It also
focuses on the core knowledge underpinning the learning of English and knowledge of the options and
resources you can use in the classroom.
The test
TKT: Module 1 consists of a single paper lasting 80 minutes and containing 80 questions. The test is divided
into three parts:
1. describing language and language skills (40 questions)
2. background to language learning (15 questions)
3. background to language teaching (25 questions)
Module 2 –
This module focuses on the knowledge and skills you need to be able to plan a lesson framework or series of
lessons.
Teaching in this context also refers to any assessment required by you to consolidate learning. It also focuses
on the resources that are available to guide you in your lesson planning.
The test
TKT: Module 2 consists of a single paper lasting 80 minutes and containing 80 questions. The test is divided
into two parts:
1. planning and preparing a lesson or sequence of lessons (40 questions))
2. selection and use of resources (40 questions).
Module 3 –
This module tests your knowledge of what happens in the classroom during language learning, the teacher’s
role and the ways in which you can manage and exploit classroom events and interactions.

TKT: Module 3 consists of a single paper lasting 80 minutes and containing 80 questions. The test is divided
into two parts:
1. teachers’ and learners’ language in the classroom (40 questions)
2. classroom management (40 questions).
