SCHOLARSHIPS FOR LANGUAGE STUDY
Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP)
Intensive Russian-language immersion for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students in Russia. Scholarships are

Arabic Overseas Flagship Program (AOFP)
For students already at the advanced (2 or 2+) levels of proficiency in Arabic. For more information, visit American

Boren Awards for International Study
For undergraduate students:
 Award amounts vary depending on program length; up to $20,000 for a full academic year, up to $10,000 for
a semester, and up to $8,000 for summer (summer grants are available to STEM students only). For students
interested in languages and area studies. Students must pursue study of languages, geographic areas and
fields of study critical to U.S. National Security. Recipients are expected to fulfill service requirement with
U.S. government upon graduation or termination of studies. Seniors are eligible to apply provided that they
do not graduate until they have completed their proposed study abroad program.
 Appointment with the Boren on-campus advisor, DeDe Long in Office of Study Abroad, is a required as part
of application process. The University of Arkansas’s campus deadline falls in mid-January. Contact the Office

For graduate students:
 Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and
language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or
increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are
critical to U.S. interests.
 Appointment with the Boren on-campus advisor, DeDe Long in Office of Study Abroad, is a required as part

Central Asian Turkic Languages Overseas Flagship Program
Advanced to professional-level training in the Azeri, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkmen and Uzbek languages at locations

CIEE Language Intensive Focus Track (LIFT) Scholarship

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the CLS Program offers intensive
summer language institutes in thirteen critical foreign languages. For more information, visit the Critical Language

Eurasian Regional Language Program
For graduate students, faculty, and recent B.A. graduates who wish to participate in this program; all financial aid

Global Studies Foundation Student Grant

Persian Overseas Flagship Program (POFP)
The Persian Flagship Programs provide for domestic study of Persian at University of Maryland, and a one-year-long

Russian Overseas Flagship Program (ROFP)

Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center Summer Arabic Language

Qatar Scholarship Program
U.S. graduate students who are dedicated to Arabic language studies have the opportunity to master their skills in an
intensive Arabic language program at Qatar University (QU) in Doha for an entire academic year (September to June).

Title VIII Southeast Europe Research Program
The program provides full support for graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars seeking to conduct incountry, independent research for three consecutive months to nine consecutive months in Central Asia, Moldova,

Title VIII Combined Research and Language Training Program
The program serves graduate students and scholars who, in addition to support for research in the independent states
