CIRCULAR NO.8-2-1
ACCEPTANCE OF AUSTRALIAN STANDARD 2080-1977 AS EQUIVALENT TO
AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS R1-1968
INTRODUCTION
1.
In October 1977 the Standards Association of Australia published Australian Standard
2080-1977, Safety G1ass for Vehicles, as a revision and metrication of Australian Standard R11968. The latter standard is called up in ADR 8 to specify the physical properties required for
glazing used in motor vehicles.
2.
The Board has considered the revised Standard and will accept evidence of compliance
with AS 2080-1977 as an alternative to evidence of compliance with AS R1-1968 (together with
amendments applicable as at November 1970) as satisfying the physical and optical qualities of
glazing for ADR 8.
DEMONSTRATION OF COMPLIANCE
3.
Arising from this decision two changes in class markings will be accepted as alternative to
(or additional to) those specified in AS R1, namely:


the use of the number ‘2080' in lieu of 'R1'at the base of the S.A.A registered certification
trade mark;
the prescribed glass markings on heat treated safety glass, used for windscreens will be
located under the approximate center line of the major axis of the modified zone.
Board Circulars Nos.19 and 24 in the first series of Circulars are also relevant.
