STUDENT NURSE II EXTERN PROGRAM
Thank you for your interest in UCSD Medical Center’s Student Nurse Extern program. We look forward to
meeting you and hope you will enjoy the many opportunities available to you by studying in the area’s only
academic medical center. UCSD offers student nurse externships in fall, spring and summer semesters at Hillcrest,
La Jolla and the Moores Cancer Center locations. Extern positions may change from semester to semester as the
unit’s needs change.
The Student Nurse II Extern Program is designed to increase the clinical confidence and competence of nursing
students. Studying under the direct supervision of a registered nurse clinical coach, the extern can observe and
participate in a variety of clinical experiences. Students may be selected for assignments in a number of clinical
and specialty areas.
Extern positions are usually available in the following units:
 Birth Center
 Emergency Department
 Family and Maternal Child Care
 ICU (must have prior ICU coursework and experience)
 Infant Special Care (NICU)
 Labor & Delivery
 Medical/Surgical
 Oncology
 PCU (Progressive Care Units)
 Quality (various units offer this opportunity) - A hybrid opportunity for students with strong communication skills, selfmotivation, and a strong alliance with ensuring patient experience. Extern will partner with nurse leaders to engage in special projects on units
across UCSD. It can combine focus on change projects, quality assurance, leadership, and patient satisfaction.


Program Requirements:




Enrollment in a nursing program that has an active clinical affiliation at UCSD through the Allied Health
Professions Education Committee (AHPEC).
Enrollment in an externship course through their school’s nursing program.
Completed their 4th semester in a BSN program or their 3rd semester in an ADN program
Provide evidence of valid American Heart Association CPR certification, health insurance and professional
liability insurance, and vaccination records (flu and Tdap) and other required documentation.
Program Highlights:

Semester-length program
120 hours
RN preceptors
Clinical experiences available in various areas of interest
Ongoing externships may be possible (pending manager approval)
Semester deadlines for submission of an application:
Fall: July 1
Spring: Nov 1 Summer: April 1
