Under the direct supervision of the Justice Section Manager, the successful candidate will be an
energetic, innovative caring person who will assist Aboriginal persons who come into conflict with
Federal, Provincial, Municipal, First Nations laws. General responsibilities include providing consistent
and ongoing attendance in advance of and during Criminal Court and Bail Court, with First Appearance
Court being a priority. Duties include acting as a liaison between the court process and client in
assisting the Indigenous Persons who come into contact with the law to ensure relevant information is
brought forward for the legal processes.
Qualifications:
1. Knowledge of the structure of the justice system
2. Knowledge of the Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Child and Family Services Act and
other relevant legislation
3. Experience in working with individuals of Indigenous ancestry
4. Post-secondary degree or diploma, preferably in area related to justice or social services
5. Must possess a valid Ontario Drivers License, have access to a vehicle and be willing to travel
when necessary
6. Knowledge of available community resources
7. Must possess excellent interviewing and counseling skills
8. Must possess excellent communication skills, written and oral
9. Ability to work under daily supervision, as well as, minimal supervision
10. Knowledge of Alternative/Restorative justice practices
11. Knowledge of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFC)
12. Knowledge of the Gladue writer program principles
13. Ability to work under strict confidentiality

To report regularly to the Justice Section Manager
To prepare accurate monthly program reports
To prepare caseload reports for Criminal Court work programs
To submit program reports on a quarterly basis to the OFIFC
To update and maintain client data regularly on the Court work database.
To maintain a court work program office that permits ready access to information as required.
7. To keep comprehensive up-to-date client files which must contain; name, address, date of birth,
contacts between client and Court worker, number and types of services and charges, outcome of
client’s case and copies of any correspondence relating to the client’s case.
8. All client files must be maintained in accordance with the OFIFC File Maintenance Policy.
9. To allocate one day per week to fulfill administrative duties at the Friendship Centre.
10. To undertake any other such reasonable duties as may be assigned from time to time.
11. Must provide vulnerable CPIC (at cost to applicant).
