Introduction
The 16th JCI Africa and Middle East Active Citizenship Academy sponsored and hosted by JCITogo will be held in Lomé,Togo from

members in Africa and Middle East and for community leaders.
History
In February 1995, JeuneChambreEconomique de St. Dennis chapter - Reunion Island of the French department - organized the first
LocalPresidents Conference for the Local Organizations of Southern Africa. The conference attracted more than 50 delegates from
South Africa, Benin, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Madagascar and Mauritius. The objectives of the Conference were,
among others, to offer training programs on Local Organization management and to benefit from international and cross-cultural
exchanges.
Later, in March of 1995, Junior Chamber South Africa under the leadership of National Organization president Mario Pretorius,
proposed to “present an annual Leadership Academy for at least 15 outstanding Junior Chamber leaders from the Southern African
region… and other invited National Organizations.”
By September of 1995, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Inc., sponsored the first series of International Training Schools (ITS) for
Africa in Mali, Nigeria and Congo to provide members the opportunity to attend PRIME courses and other management and
professional seminars. In 1996, the ITS was again successfully conducted in Malawi, Ghana, Cameroon and Republic of Benin, in
1997 in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Zambia and Morocco. In 1998 members had the opportunity to participate in the ITS
program in Botswana. Today, more than 220 participants have graduated from the ITS program since its inception in 1995.
At the 1996 JCI 51st World Congress in Pusan, Korea, Senator HaritSheth (ITF #033) of Kenya Junior Chamber proposed the need
for an African Academy - an Academy endorsed by JCI but sponsored and hosted by Kenya Junior Chamber annually for 3 years.
The JCI African Academy was approved and endorsed, in November 1997, at the General Assembly of the 52nd JCI World Congress
held in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.
From 1999 to 2002 the first four academies were organized and sponsored by JCI Kenya. Thereafter JCI Benin took over the relay
baton both organized and sponsored the Academy from 2003 to 2005. In 2005 mindful of the experience of the 7th Academy which
took place just before the 2005 Conference in Cotonou, a decision was made to hold the academy every year just before the
conference. This also permits the academy participants to attend the JCI Conference.
The 16th JCI Africa and Middle East Active CitizenshipAcademy will be organized by JCI Togoin Lomé from May18 – 20, 2014. The
