Gladstone Region
Business Advisory
Services developing
sustainable,
resilient businesses
The Bundaberg Business Enterprise Centre (BEC) will provide high quality,
low cost advisory services targeted towards improving management
capability, business skills and/or financial management skills of micro and
small businesses that are directly or indirectly impacted by ex-tropical
cyclone Oswald and associated rainfall, flooding and tornadoes.
As an extension of its small business support services, BIEDO will address
two deficiencies hampering recovery of individual enterprises, supply chains
and the regional economy. An experienced business financial counsellor
(BFC) will work intensively with SMEs on a one-on-one customised basis.
Intensive post-flood re-building, facilitated by the BFC, will focus on cash
flow recovery, practical business re-structuring, new loan negotiation or renegotiation of existing loans. The ultimate goal is post-flood stability and
revival. Ten hands-on workshops will up skill regional enterprises in use of
internet, social media and email as tools for Crisis Management, Disaster
Recovery and Future Preparedness and Revival. A phone-based 'Talk to a
Techie' service will provide 'as needs' follow-up. The ultimate goal is
improved self-reliance in information management during and after a
disaster and increased independence in undertaking basic recovery actions.
BEC Sunshine Coast will provide contingency and continuity management
skills mentoring, planning advice, information and business mentoring
programs to small businesses that accelerate return to normal trading and
advance Queensland businesses impacted by recent natural disasters and
severe weather events. Services will build connection with experienced,
high value mentoring and provide advice that transfers skills and enriches
business life in areas of business management, operations, marketing,
financial management and customer experience. Project will provide
flexible, timely and relevant business development programs, information
and advice that increase business management skills and know-how, provide
easily implemented pathways and action planning that add value,
innovation, resilience and sustainability for business and local community.
Gladstone Region Small Business Advisory Services will provide a series of
regular workshops, networking opportunities, one on one mentoring and
diagnostic sessions and referrals to government agencies which will
empower the small business proprietor. Small businesses will be better
positioned and equipped to meet the challenges of future crisis situations.
The businesses will be proficient across current business management
practices which include effective marketing and digital tools.

The proposed seminar series will deliver vital, relevant and targeted
information on disaster risk management directly to small farm businesses
across Queensland. The seminars will provide information, resources and
tools that will assist small horticultural business owners to understand the
potential sources of risk and to identify simple cost-effective strategies to
mitigate that risk. The project will further develop Growcom's disaster risk
information pack and toolbox and develop additional content based on
existing research and provide valuable exposure and extension for these
resources via a series of seminars in regional areas, followed by webinars
that will provide an ongoing, free online resource for small farm businesses.

Preparing Business
for Tomorrow
Today
To facilitate the recovery of Whitsunday businesses impacted by the
associated rain event and flooding from ex-tropical Cyclone Oswald in early
2013, the Whitsundays BEC proposes to offer a business mentoring program
to eligible businesses with the aim to ‘Prepare Business for Tomorrow
Today’. Mentoring will focus on the areas of financial planning, business
management and minimising the effects of future events through
introduction of business continuity, risk management and succession
planning initiatives. Industries where business was most notably effected
across the Whitsunday include marine, retail, construction, tourism and
agriculture.
