Unit Title:
Multiply with One and Two-Digit Numbers
Essential Questions:
 Does the product of a multiple of 10 always have a zero in the ones place?
 How is estimation helpful when finding a product mentally?
 How can estimation be used to check multiplication problems for reasonableness?
 How can the Distributive Property help when you are multiplying by a two-digit number?
 How is multiplying by multi-digit numbers similar to multiplying by two-digit numbers?
 Why do products of multi-digit numbers with zeros and one-digit numbers sometimes have zeros in them and sometimes have no zeros in them?
 How can I communicate multiplication?
 How can I multiply by a two-digit number?
 How can place value help me multiply a two-digit number b a multiple of 10?
 How does an estimated product relate to the actual product?
 Why can’t the product of two two-digit numbers ever be two digits?
 How can I use equations to model real-world problems?
Standards:
 4.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten ties what it represents in the place to its right.
 4.NBT.3 Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
 4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and
the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
 4.OA.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which
remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers
using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
