Teaching Approach
校、小学校、中学校、部活、etc). I add a romaji, hiragana, and kanji column.
I isolate 1 or 2 key phrases and use pairwork to practice these short phrases
such as 何年生ですか。高校一年生です。Before I talk in detail about
schools in Japan, I ask the students to fill out a form on differences and
similarities. I present them with a number of facts about Japanese schools and
they have to write in the equivalent facts relating to Irish schools. As I have a
number of newcomer students in my classes, I ask them to fill out facts
relating to their countries as well. Then I hand out some information about
education in Japan. Finally, I show a number of youtube clips of Sports and
Culture Days in various highschools in Japan.

備考
I found that students were interested in this topic and there were
Notes
quite a few points that they wanted to discuss. Using the youtube
clips held their attention as Japanese schools really put on a great
show for their Sports and Culture Days. Last year, I linked up with
a school in Kanazawa and students exchanged cards throughout the
year. They were able to include some of the phrases they had learnt
in this activity in their introductory cards.
