4.5”-12x17” art quilts
Optional embellishments, batik scraps and decorative threads available for a small fee
Some say they are representational, yet others comment, “quite abstract”. I call them
quiltspirations or little pieces of art. Inspired by nature, design and other artists, I create each unique
quilt, suitable for framing.
Class Description:
Participants will play, explore and experiment with fabric scraps to create a unique art
quilt, without a pattern. Using reference photos from nature, vacation trips, or other artists,
students will study color value, proportion, and line design. Use aspects of the study to create
an individualistic piece with embellishments. Plan for a few postcard size quilts or one larger
piece, up to 12x18”. Machine and hand stitching required.
Materials for Class:
Reference photos, art objects, or items from nature
Fabric: variety of scraps (preferably hand dyed or painted or batik pieces as small as
1” in width x any length, in various color values), fabric backing and batting 1” larger than
quilted piece, 1¼” x 42” strips for binding
Embellishments: such as beads, found objects, buttons and yarns
Basic sewing kit: sewing machine, neutral sewing machine thread, top stitching threads in
various colors, rotary cutter and replacement blades, mat and ruler, hand sewing needle, beading
needle, & ¼” foot or appropriate marking on machine for an accurate seam.
