The application for one Fellowship Position is open for a highly enthusiastic, flexible and
autonomous Molecular Biology Research Technician, with strong communication,
organizational and managerial skills to manage and develop molecular biology projects in
the context of the Champalimaud Scientific and Technological Platforms.
Candidates will be working as part of an international team in a new research institute on
the Lisbon’s waterfront.
1. Duration: The Fellowship will have the duration of 12 months, with the possibility of
renewal for an additional two periods of 12 months each, starting on 01.05.2013, in
exclusiveness regime, as regulated by Lei n.º 40/2004, of 18 August, and of the fellowship
regulations of the Champalimaud Foundation.
2. Subject of Activities:
The Molecular Biology Research Technician will be responsible for designing, developing
and implementing a number of molecular biology tools to support the Champalimaud
research teams. A key responsibility will be the production of customized AAV 2/1 viruses.
Additional activities include:
 Maintain mammalian cell culture and preparing them for virus production
 Prepare, purify, titrate and test viruses, and develop optimized protocols
 Perform cloning and sub cloning with plasmid vectors
 Perform basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, competent cells production,
DNA/RNA preps, etc.)
 Manage general laboratory operations
 Write and perform quality reviews of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
 Maintain detailed laboratory records
 Maintain viral vector and plasmids databases
 Order vectors from external sources on behalf of researchers

4. Selection Criteria:
Talented scientist (MSc or PhD level) who is enthusiastic about science has high regard
for detail, as well as good communication, organizational and management skills.
Expertise in mammalian cell culture and experience with maintenance, contamination
testing and cryopreservation of cultured mammalian cells. Proficiency in molecular biology
including past experience with cloning, restriction enzyme digestions, ligations, bacterial
transformations, plasmid preparations, PCR and in vitro RNA production. Previous
experience with virus production is highly desirable. The candidate must be able to work
with minimal supervision and be fluent in English, as this is the Centre’s official language.
