Norfolk Schools Broadband Service is a complete package of safe and secure connectivity and
communication services designed to safeguard your young people and data which is a world
away from the high-street broadband deals that schools and academies are being offered. This
document sets out the main features of our service and explains why we think they are
important.
ICT Shared Services recognises that schools are under more pressure than ever to drive value
from their suppliers. Working with our partners at BT, we have created the Norfolk Schools
Broadband Service to deliver a good value service that is fit for purpose.
Raising Attainment & Supporting Education
The internet can be an enabler for teachers and an engaging platform for learners but it will
only reach its potential if it is delivered in a fast, secure and reliable way. This takes the right
combination of hardware, services and support.
Our support team is based in Norwich at County Hall, not a call centre in London or abroad and
we know and understand the unique demands of education on an ICT infrastructure. We’re on
hand to prioritise your issues, and we’ll be there to support you especially through the busier
and more demanding parts of the school year.

Your Service: Features and Benefits
We recognise that schools have specific and unique requirements; therefore we offer the
following features:
What we
Offer
A Reliable
Service
How its Delivered
Why it’s important to you
We offer 99.99% network
availability as part of a service
level agreement which includes
aggressive fault response times
and a resilient hardware &
software build.
Cheap internet connections might suffice when they
are running, but if they fail during a critical exam
period you need to know that your service will be
restored almost immediately. We offer you that
peace of mind.
Safe and
Secure
Connectivity
Internet Filtering, Enterprise-level
Firewalls and Anti-Virus
There are a growing number of cyber-threats on the
web and schools and academies have a
responsibility to ensure that their pupils are safe
and secure when online. We take on this
responsibility for you.
Guaranteed
Bandwidth
A synchronous fibre network
connection to our data centre
backed up with a second ADSL
line for secondary schools.
Quality of Service provided across
the network.
Schools require a high quality link to the internet
and network services. It’s also important that you
have the same upload speed as download so that
you can upload critical school data and so that
teachers and pupils can access services in the school
from home.
Why use the Norfolk Broadband Service?
Our solution is designed for education. Other suppliers might commit to aggressive SLAs if you
pay the right price, but the only way to guarantee uptime is to build a reliable, secure,
education quality network. Ours is explained below:
* For a few schools it has not been possible to install fibre links.
* ADSL line applies to secondary schools.

We’re part of the NEN
National Education Network is a learning and teaching resource providing schools
with a secure network designed and maintained by experts within the educational
community. NEN provides a wealth of services and resources, many of which can
only be accessed via your Norfolk Broadband connection.
We’re a Member of E2BN, East of England Broadband Consortium
E2BN provides a range of exciting online learning resources for all keystages. For example, the
E2BN gallery is packed with thousands of unique, high quality, e-safe images which can be
downloaded and used copyright free for educational purposes. These resources are only
available free to schools with Norfolk Schools Broadband.
What does this mean for
my school?
As well as access to all the
learning and teaching resources
described above, schools
connected to the Norfolk
Broadband Service are
connected to E2BN Regional
Broadband Consortium.
E2BN and all the other regional
Broadband consortia across the
UK connect to create NEN the
Education Network.
This means you are a part of a
national secure network so
when you share resources or
collaborate with any other
schools connected to their
region you are doing so in a
secure environment.
Commercial internet
connections use the public
internet.
More information and access to
resources is available from
E2BN website

Norfolk Cloud Portal
The Norfolk Cloud Portal enables school users to access a wide range of applications endorsed
by the schools community through a single point with one user ID and password.
The Norfolk Cloud Portal is provided as part of the Broadband contract and gives you access to
an array of educational applications and content, some of which are free of charge. You will
have access a member of the Norfolk Broadband Service to a range of teaching and learning
resources from E2BN, NEN the Education Network and other regional Broadband consortia.
These resources are chargeable to non-members. In addition the Portal gives you the
opportunity to purchase online resources from leading educational content providers such as
Espresso, J2E, BrainPop and 2Simple.
Our approach to content in the Norfolk Cloud Portal is based on school community led apps,
chosen by you for you. We will continually increase the number of suppliers confirmed in
response to requests from you. All of the suppliers within the Portal meet Technical and
Curriculum criteria and we ensure accessibility and equality are always considered at the point

ICT Shared Services processes the verification and vetting of suppliers on the Portal so you can
securely and confidently purchase products which have been nominated by other Norfolk
schools, vetted for technical requirements and easily delivered to you through the Norfolk
Cloud Portal. This means that your staff and pupils can have access to business and education
applications from anywhere 24/7 with one single ID and login for each individual in school.
