About the Authors
Hratch Karamanoukian, MD
Dr. Hratch Karamanoukian, MD is a cardiovascular and thoracic
surgeon and vein specialist with triple board certification – in general
surgery, thoracic surgery (heart and lungs) and phlebology. In 1999, Drs.
Karamanoukian, Bergsland and Salerno were the first in the U.S. to perform
beating heart robotic coronary artery bypass surgery.
Dr. Karamanoukian obtained his training at UCLA, the University of
Southern California and the University at Buffalo. He has received
numerous teaching awards during his training and is listed in 'Guide to
America's Top Surgeons' by the Consumers Research Council of America (2008-2011). He
also received the 2009 and 2010 designation from the Consumers Research Council of
America for his expertise in Venous Disorders (Phlebology).
Dr. Karamanoukian has performed NIH sponsored research (1992-1995) at the Childrens
Hospital of Buffalo in the fields of pulmonary hypertension, inhaled nitric oxide, surfactant
physiology and fetal surgery. He has also done seminal research in fetal surgery at the
Childrens Hospital with Dr. Philip L Glick, a pediatric surgeon of international stature and
pioneer in the field of fetal surgery. Childrens Hospital of Buffalo was the second center in
the United States that developed a clinical program in fetal surgery (1989) - The Buffalo
Institute of Fetal Surgery (BIFT).
Dr. Karamanoukian has published more than 140 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals
in the fields of fetal surgery, robotic surgery, beating heart surgery, pulmonary hypertension,
congenital diaphragmatic hernia, cardiovascular surgery and cardiovascular medicine. He has
authored or co-authored 15 textbooks and review books in the fields of cardiac surgery,
thoracic surgery and general surgery. His review books have helped thousands of surgery
residents pass their written and oral surgery board examinations (for the American Board of
Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery). These books, titled ABSITE Combat
Manual (first and second editions), Thoracic Surgery Board Review, Red Manual for the
Surgery Boards, Blue Manual Basic Science Review (volumes 1,2 and 3) among others, are
well recognized by trainees sitting for their specialty board examinations. He has also written
Cardiac Surgery Secrets and Thoracic Surgery Secrets through Elsevier Press. Cardiac
Surgery Secrets is in 2nd Edition and has been translated into Russian, Portuguese, Spanish,
Arabic, Armenian, Chinese and Turkish editions.
Dr. Karamanoukian has also authored or coauthored books about cardiovascular health for
the lay public entitled “Doctor, How Do I Live the Heart Healthy Way?” and “Doctor, Tell
Me About High Blood Pressure and Stroke”.
Dr. Karamanoukian is Director of the Vein Treatment Center and the Center for Excessive

Zora DeGrandpre, MS, ND
Dr. DeGrandpre is a licensed naturopathic physician with a background in
clinical and basic science research. Her original training was as an organic
chemist, specializing in drug design. Her BS, from SUNY at Buffalo, is in
Medicinal Chemistry. Dr DeGrandpre received her Master`s degree from
Roswell Park Cancer Institute where her research focused on cancer
immunology. Later, as a PhD candidate, she examined the idiotypic
relationships involved in the regulation of T-suppressor cells, a type of
regulatory immune cell.
After a number of years teaching in Buffalo area schools, Dr DeGrandpre’s moved to the West
Coast and obtained a doctorate in natural medicine, awarded by the National College of Natural
Medicine in 2007. She has served as a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and
the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NIH/NCCAM). In addition,
her expertise in natural medicine has been called upon in litigation matters, specifically on the
properties of various herbal medicines and their interactions with pharmacologic agents. She is
also the Scientific Review Editor for an upcoming foundational textbook in natural medicine.
She has published textbooks in botanical medicine, drug-herb interactions, the treatment of
alcoholism and addiction, homeopathy and other topics. Dr DeGrandpre is also a writer and
editor for academia, writing scientific grants and curricula for Integrative Medicine programs.
She also writes for industry and the public, writing articles and monographs on various
supplements, providing well-researched and documented information for both professionals and
non-professionals on various herbal medicines and supplements. She also lectures on various
topics, including diets to treat and prevent chronic disease, the use of bio-identical hormones,
mind-body medicine, and naturopathic approaches to women’s health and addictions. Her
practice, located at the historic Academy in Vancouver, Washington, focuses on natural
approaches to healing, utilizing diet, nutrition, botanical medicines, mind-body medicine and
using bioidentical hormones to achieve balance and health. She also works with patients to
minimize their use of pharmacologic medicines while maximizing their health and wellness.
Dr. DeGrandpre is also a Reiki Master and certified Healing Touch practitioner and has a
particular interest in traditional native healing, and travels around the country, listening and
learning to Native American elders. She holds a 2nd degree black belt in Isshinryu karate. Dr
DeGrandpre and her husband share 8 children and 11 grandchildren, a golden retriever named
