Chapter 7

Terrible Dreams of Falling From the Sky

Falling on my back as I look up into the dark blue sky above me, I see the bottom of a small white plane diminishing from my view as I floated down the sky on my back. How did I get here? I started to feel a sharp pain jabbing in my chest, as my breathing became more intensified. I felt hopeless like an injured bird, incapable of expanding my wings. The sense of intense panic came over me for that few seconds, wondering how I am going to land safely or not. The gravity is pulling me harder to the ground below me, tumbling in midair. The glimpse of the ground below me seems very pale, very plain, and much unspoken for. The fear of heights came upon me and knowing that if I did not do something quick, I will meet the “bottomless pit” below me. Then something horrific started to happen. I started tumbling out of control as I fall to my death. I realized that I am only a teenager and I couldn’t believe my life was going to end abruptly. I suddenly woke up sweaty and out of breath, thanking God that it was another horrific dream I had, an undesirable dream with no answers…

Two decades later, these many horrific dreams occurred unexpected. Attached to a

Marine Corps paratroop unit, it was another routine training jump out of a plane at 6500 feet.

Immediately after exiting the rear of the plane, I had entered a serious turbulent wind usually called a “hot pocket”, it was produced by the airplane’s propeller blades that had sent me falling on my back for a few seconds and then produced a tumbling effect in midair. Out of adrenaline rush and panic of not being in control, this occurrence reminded me that split second of the many dreams I had when I was younger! I forced a dive in midair to cease the tumbling effect, and extended my arms to gain maneuverability again. Whew, that was a close one!
