1. Introduction to Indonesian Puppet Show* (Puji Karyanto, M.Hum and Nur Wulan, Ph.D.)
This course introduces students to Javanese cultures and ethics through the discussion of
Javanese shadow puppet theatre. The course pays particular attention to symbolic
presentation of prominent characters, how their character traits are connected to their
physical appearances. Students could also learn about Javanese social order from this
traditional puppet show.
2. Traditions in Contemporary Urban Cultures (Vincent, M.Hum)
This course discusses about the dynamics of traditional cultures in contemporary urban
life, and how they are intertwined with social class, commodification, and other issues that
characterise an increasingly capitalistic society. The course also talks about the ways
traditional cultures, such as keris, could co-exist with contemporary urban cultures.
3. Urban Youth Cultures (Dadung Ibnu Muktiono, M.C.S.)
This course discusses about the definition of youth cultures and the variety of
contemporary youth cultures in Indonesia, such as music (rock, hiphop, pop), punk /
gothic communities, sneakers, skater, comics, movies and anime, sports, and religious
movements.
4. Indonesian Contemporary Films (Diah Ariani Arimbi, Ph.D.)
This course discusses about Indonesian contemporary films, especially about the ways
the films have been attempting to give ‘voice to the voiceless’. Through these films,
contemporary phenomena taking place in post-Reformasi Indonesia, such as pluralism,
queer, and civil movements can be portrayed.
5. Indonesian Contemporary Popular Cultures (Arum Budiastuti, M.C.S)
This course discusses about the concepts of popular cultures, the variety of contemporary
popular cultures in Indonesia, as well as the ideological aspects found in Indonesian
communities and media.
6. Cultural Trips to Multicultural Sites (Dewi Meyrasyawati, M.A)
In this program, students will visit a number of sites which reflect the multicultural and
pluralistic aspects of East Javanese cultures. The visits will be grouped based on different
cultural themes, such as religious pluralism, culinary, and Surabaya Old Town.
7. State Ideology and Pluralism (Mochammad Ali M.A.Min)
This course introduces students to Pancasila, Indonesia’s state ideology. In this course,
students will learn about Pancasila as a system of philosophy and ethics, as well as the
ideological basis that governs Indonesian civic and social life.
8. East Javanese Batik Lesson (Rahmad Setyo Wibowo, S.Pd.)
This course is delivered in the form of a workshop in which students will get hands-on
experience in making batik, a very well-known Indonesian art. In this course, students
will be making East Javanese pattern of batik.
9. Indonesian Traditional Music (Gamelan) Course (Faculty of Humanities Team)
This course introduces students to Indonesian Traditional Music (Gamelan). At the end
of the course, students will be performing gamelan jam session with the assistance of the
instructors.
10. East Javanese Dance Course (Tri Broto Wibisono – East Javanese Artist/Dancer)
This course is in the form of workshop in which students will be learning to dance an
East Javanese dance.
