R.E – Expectations
In this topic we will be learning about
Christians celebrating the birth of Jesus,
given by God as a sign and expression of
God’s love. Giving and receiving reflects the
truth that all life is given by God and life is
given meaning through the birth of Jesus.
Advent is a time of joyful expectation, as we
prepare to receive Jesus into our lives and to
share this gift with others at Christmas and
throughout the year.
Skills
Children will understand:
• The meaning of expectation.
• Advent, a time of joyful expectation of
Christmas, the Word becoming a human
person, Jesus.
Year 6 – Autumn 2
Revolution
P.E
Music
This term the children will be having
their P.E lessons with Paul from Little
League each Friday. They will be
developing their skills in invasion
games such as basketball and football.
They will also be having 4 weeks of
Tae-Kwondo, learning all about selfdefence.
The children will be hearing different
sounds from the Victorian era.
Skills: Play competitive games and
apply basic principles suitable for
attacking and defending.

Application of English across the
curriculum: Speaking and listening.
PSHE: Anti-bullying and
Positive Friendships
DT
This term we are making a Victorian
slum. The children will design and
produce their own Victorian model of a
slum.
Application of maths across the curriculum:
Measuring materials.

Speaking and Listening.
This term we will be focusing
on the meaning of bullying with
the children. We will also be
having an anti-bullying week
where the children will learn all
about how to stand up against
bullying and look to develop
and form positive friendship
groups.
History – The Victorians
This half term we are going to be studying World
War 2. The children have already made a fantastic
start and have been finding out lots of interesting
facts.
They will also perform traditional
Christmas carols.
Skills: Each week we will learn about a different
aspect of life during the Victorian period. These will
include: Life as a poor and rich child, crime and
punishment, Victorian slums, Queen Victoria,
inventions and the industrial revolution.
Skills: Take the lead in performances
and provide suggestions to others.
Application of maths across the curriculum:
Understanding time.
Application of maths across the
curriculum: Counting beats and
following rhythm patterns.
Application of English across the curriculum: The
children will write a diary extract of a poor
Victorian child and a biography about Queen
Victoria and George Stephenson.
Application of English across the
curriculum: Reading and learning
lyrics.
ICTWe are project managers
During this unit the children will
work collaboratively to develop
a smartphone or tablet app.
Skills: Select, use and combine
a variety of software on a range
of digital devices and create a
range of programs.
Learning Visits: This term, as part of our
Victorians topic, the children will be going
to Croxteth Park for a Victorian Christmas
The children will also be visiting by train
the Museum of Science and Industry in
Manchester as part of an art project with
METAL.
Class Novel: This term we will be reading A
Christmas Carol as our class novel. So why
not ask the children about the story and
the characters involved.
Mathematics
Things you can do with your child at home:
In maths this half term we will cover one week on each of the following:
Reading




Number and place value with numbers up to 7 digits.
The four rules of number - Being able to choose the most efficient method and mental
problems.
Problem solving -Encouraging children to use the most efficient method to solve multistep
problems.
Fractions - Adding and subtracting them.
English – Imagery Poetry, biographies and journalistic writing
Imagery poetry: The children will read a range of poems that create an image in their head. The children will
then plan, write and edit their own imagery poem.
Biographies The children will read a variety of different biographies and auto-biographies. Then the children
will plan, write and edit their own biography and auto-biography about the person if their choice.
Journalistic Writing: The children will read a selection of different styles of journalistic writing. Then the
children will plan, write and edit their own newspaper article.
We will continue to improve our grammatical knowledge and this term we will be recapping on
personification, metaphors and similes.
Please ensure that you listen to your child read
every night. Once your children has read to you
then please ask them questions about the chapter
or book such as who was their favourite character?
Can they predict what might happen next?
Encourage the children to read a variety of
different books and texts at their leisure.
Times Tables
We are working hard to practise ALL of our times
tables in Year 6. The children need to be able to
recall their times tables from 1-12 and they must
be able to do this quickly and know the
corresponding division facts.
Science – Danger! Low Voltage!
The children develop their understanding of electrical circuits and build on the work from previous years.
They construct circuits with an increasing number of components and contrast the effects this has on the
function of the components. They role play the flow of electricity through a basic circuit and one that
includes fuse wire, to model the effect that this has on other components. The children learn to use the
recognised electrical symbols to record circuits, particularly as the circuits become more complex.

Homework
Learning logs will be sent home every other Friday
and will usually be based on our current topic.
On the other Friday then Maths and Literacy
homework will be sent home.
