NEW ALUMNI CHAPTER CHECKLIST
Thank you for your interest in starting a Sigma Alpha Sorority alumni chapter! You’ll
notice that alumni chapters are as involved as your membership is willing to be. The
National Sorority Board stands by to help you with this endeavor and wishes you the best
of luck in establishing a local way to keep the bonds of sisterhood alive and kicking.
Before your chapter can be chartered, it must:
Step 1: Contact the Chapter Development Director at development@sigmaalpha.org to
notify them of your interest and speak to them about becoming an alumni chapter.
Step 2: Submit the information below to the Development Director at
development@sigmaalpha.org.
Step 3: Wait for the National Sorority Board’s decision (10-30 days after submission).
Step 4: You’re an Alumni Chapter of Sigma Alpha Sorority!

_________ Hold an organizational meeting.
Once established, the chapter must hold at least one general business meeting for the
entire membership of the chapter per fiscal year. The officer team must have at least two
meetings (officer meetings may be either a physical meeting or a conference call).
_________ Elect the four required alumni officers.
Each alumni chapter must have an elected president, vice president, treasurer and
secretary. As any officer changes occur, the chapter must notify the National Sorority
Board by emailing document@sigmaalpha.org.
_________ Meet alumni membership requirements.
Each alumni chapter must have at least four members that are dues-paying members or
fully paid lifetime members of the National Sorority.
_________ Petition the National Sorority Board for Recognition.
Write a letter of petition to the National Sorority Board stating that a new chapter exists
and would like to be recognized by the National Sorority. This petition must be signed
by at least four members of the new chapter.
________ $50 Charter Fee
A yearly franchise fee of $25 must be submitted each following year by Sept. 30. Mail a
check to Sigma Alpha Sorority, PO Box 570, Muskego, WI 53150-0570.
________ Officer List
Provide officers’ names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and whether
they are a paid national alumni member.

they are a paid national alumni member.
________ Organizational Meeting Minutes
Provide any organizational meeting minutes.
________ Bylaws signed and dated by two Chapter Officers
A set of bylaws for the local chapter must be submitted to the National Sorority Board for
approval. Any subsequent changes made to the bylaws must be submitted to the National
Sorority Board as they are made. Please review the enclosed example of bylaws for your
reference.
________ Proof of Checking Account
Provide the name of the bank in which your account is located and the name of the
account.
________ Proof of IRS EIN & Policy Statement
The IRS requires all Sigma Alpha chapters to have their own Employee ID Numbers
(EINs). Submit the attached policy statement along with the official IRS letter stating
your alumni chapter’s EIN number.
The information above is stated in Article XI of the National Bylaws.
After submission, the petition will be voted upon by the National Sorority Board. Once
voted upon, the Development Director will notify you of the decision and provide you
with the Vice President of Alumni contact information. She will be able to assist you
submitting your annual franchise renewal fee, annual report, and answering any
additional questions that your chapter may have. Please feel free to contact you’re the
Vice President of Alumni or the National Sorority Board at any time. We would be
delighted to help further the efforts of your chapter.
After you’re an alumni chapter, your charter will be presented at the next National
Convention. The Development Director will be able to tell you which National
Convention.
