The Geography Department
Geography at Henbury School is an active and thought provoking subject. It is a subject that is both current and practical.
At Key Stage 3 we study a wide range of topics, both human and physical, these include:
Year 7
1. Making Connections – teaches basic Geography skills and introduces our link with the Masindi Secondary School in
Uganda.
2. Maps Make Sense – examining grid references, distance, direction, scale, contours.
3. World of Sport – with reference to the Olympic Games, Football world cup and how Geography has close links with
Sport.
Year 7 will be assessed 3 times in Geography:
Sketching and asking Questions
Graph drawing and analysis
Grid references
Students in Year 7 will complete a Homework project that lasts one term – this will cover the topics of Making Connections
and Maps Makes Sense.
Year 8
1. Can the Earth Cope? – focusses on rainforests and renewable energy
2. Raging Rivers – examines river landforms and processes, as well as focussing on flooding, its causes, impacts and
management techniques.
3. Crumbling Coasts – examines coastal landforms and processes and then looks at the Dorset Coastline and the
formation of the stunning Jurassic Coast.
Year 8 will be assessed 4 times in Geography :
Why is it called a Tropical rainforest?
How do animals adapt to the rainforest?
Where is the best site for a wind farm?
Why was the flooding in Bangladesh so catastrophic?
Students in Year 8 will complete a Homework project that lasts one term – this will cover the topic of Can the Earth Cope.
We currently run a trip in Year 8 during term 5/6 to the Jurassic Coast in Dorset – visiting Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.
Year 9
1. Local Actions, Global Effects – focussing on National Parks and the conflicts that exist in them. We then study
Antarctica and its importance and fragility.
2. The Restless Earth – examining the structure of the earth and then looking at the formation and impact that
volcanoes and earthquakes have.
3. People Everywhere – looking at the reasons for the population explosion and then considering various population
issues around the world – China’s One Child Policy, illegal migration in Mexico. We will then move onto Population
issues in Italy and Brazil.
Year 9 will be assessed 4 times in Geography – Where should a new visitor’s centre be built?
Why can no-one live permanently on Antarctica?
How and why did Mrs Endo die in the Kobe Earthquake?
Shanty towns – slums of hope or slums of despair?
Students in Year 9 will complete a Homework project that lasts one term – this will cover the topic of The Restless Earth.
We currently run a trip in Year 9 during term 1 to the National Park of the Brecon Beacons in South Wales.
Year 10 and 11: Key Stage 4 – We study the Edexcel A GCSE Syllabus that was introduced in 2009. This syllabus was chosen
for it choice and wide range of Geography and skills needed. It is a great introduction for those students considering
Geography at A- level, but is accessible for all students.
Field trip proposed – River Valley – South Wales
Controlled Assessement – trip will vary according the the question set.
