JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION:
Teacher and Assistant Teacher POLICY COUNCIL APPROVAL: 4-28-15
DEPARTMENT: KI BOIS Head Start
FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
JOB SUMMARY- Principle duties include: planning and delivery of a comprehensive Head Start program on a daily basis,
evaluating the effectiveness of child development activities, ensuring the safety and physical well-being of the children,
maintaining regular communication with parents, and contributing to the effective operation of the overall Head Start
program. The Teacher is directly responsible for his/her classroom. The Assistant Teacher is to work cooperatively to fulfill all
program functions.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
1. Implementing the KI BOIS Program Plan and adapting it to serve the needs of the class, incorporating all
components of the Federal Performance Standards, DHS Licensing Standards and KI BOIS policies and
procedures.
2. Recruiting and enrolling eligible children, including a minimum of 10% with a disabling condition, making every effort
to ensure full enrollment and 85% Average Daily Attendance at all times.
3. Developing and coordinating the Daily Schedule and Weekly Lesson Plan.
4. Planning, coordinating and implementing classroom activities, including all required screenings and assessments,
following Head Start Performance Standards and KI BOIS Program Plan with emphasis on individual child's needs.
5. Providing information to Family Service Worker, as requested, concerning the development of the Family
Partnership Agreement.
6. Assisting Head Start families in completing Sooner Care applications.
7. Making at least two Home Visits to children's homes, and conducting at least two Parent Conferences for each child
to discuss the child's progress, health and developmental screening reports, to inquire about family needs and make
referrals to needed services.
8. Maintaining accurate records and submitting reports to the Central Office as required.
9. Recruiting, coordinating and supervising volunteer services.
10. Attending Parent Committee and Parent Training according to KI BOIS Program Plan.
11. Conducting the Community Assessment within the local area as instructed.
12. Working as a partner with Family Service Worker and other agency staff for the delivery of health services, assuring
that each child is screened and attends follow-up appointments. The Assistant Teacher must provide transportation
to services, as necessary.
13. Assisting Family Service Workers with making referrals of children and/or family members to various appropriate
health and other services.
14. Assisting with transitioning children into Head Start at enrollment and out of Head Start into other programs and
schools.
15. Interacting with children at their level. Able to stoop, crawl, kneel and bend in order to speak to children at the child's
eye level, to play with children, to pick up toys and equipment to maintain a safe learning environment.
16. Cleans and changes child's clothes who has accidentally soiled self or is disabled and cannot control bodily
functions.
17. Sweeps and mops floors, cleans all equipment, classrooms, bathrooms, cabinets and storage areas daily, providing
a clean sanitary environment for children and staff.
18. Prepares classroom daily and arranges room with attractive, inviting areas that promote opportunities for learning,
provide optimal supervision and a safe environment to facilitate movement and participation in an orderly manner.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Certified Teachers in classrooms where KI BOIS is in collaborative agreement with the Public School must have the
following:
(A) A 4-year degree;
(B) Have passed the Early Childhood State Certification Test; and
(C) Have passed the Oklahoma General Education Test.
Teachers must be at least 18 years of age, meet all DHS health and training requirements, and have
(A) an associate degree in early childhood education;
(B) an associate degree in a related field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education,
with experience teaching preschool-age children; or
(C) a baccalaureate degree and has been admitted into the Teach For America program, passed a rigorous early
childhood content exam, such as the Praxis II, participated in a Teach For America summer training institute that
includes teaching preschool children, and is receiving ongoing professional development and support from Teach For
America's professional staff.
At least 50% of Head Start teachers, nation-wide, must, by September 30, 2013 have a BA or advanced degree in early
childhood education or a related degree with experience teaching pre-school age children.
Assistant Teachers in classrooms where we have collaborative agreements with the Public School must be 18 years of
age, meet all DHS health and training requirements and have one of the following:
(A) An Associate Degree; or
(B) Completed 48 hours of college credit; or
(C) Pass the ParaPro or OGET Test.
Assistant Teachers must be 18 years of age, meet all DHS health and training requirements and have one of the following:
(A) A high school diploma or GED and two years of satisfactory full-time experience in a child care setting.
(B) A high school diploma or GED and 12 college credit hours in child development, early childhood education or a
closely related subject; or
( C ) A high school diploma or GED and successful completion or a child care training program that meets the criteria
approved by the Child Care Advisory Committee.
All Head Start Assistant Teachers must, by September 30, 2013, have at least a CDA credential or Certificate of Mastery
in Child Development or be enrolled in a program leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree or be enrolled in a CDA
credential program or a Certificate of Mastery in Child Development that will be completed within two years.
Training:
A. Orientation must occur within one week of employment and prior to having sole responsibility for a group of
children. This should include a review of the following:

Injury prevention.
Handling common childhood emergencies including choking.
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS);
Shaken baby syndrome;
The center’s policy and procedures and staff responsibility for implementation.
Licensing requirements and Performance Standards.
Employee’s assigned duties and responsibilities.
Emergency procedures in the event of injury, severe weather or fire, including evacuation
procedures and routes and location and the use of fire extinguishers.
10. The definition, identification and mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect.
11. The daily schedule.
12. The methods used to inform staff of any special health, nutritional or developmental needs of children
assigned to the caregiver.
13. Confidentiality of information regarding staff, children and their families.
14. Appropriate use of discipline.
15. Transportation and car seat safety.
16. Any other information stated on the Head Start Orientation form.
Documentation, signed by the employee and supervisor, must be filed in each employee’s personnel file attesting to the
orientation and review.
B. All teaching staff must be certified in CPR and First Aid (as required by DHS Licensing requirements) within 12
months of employment. It is the responsibility of each staff member to keep this certification up-to-date.
C. Teaching staff are encouraged to work towards an Associate or a Baccalaureate Degree in Early Childhood Education or
any related field.
D. Teaching staff must participate in the Entry-Level Child Care Training (ELCCT) that provides at least 20 hours of training,
in accordance with DHS Licensing requirements and also complete at least 12 clock hours per year of Tier I training.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL HEAD START STAFF
Staff MUST NOT:
1. Subject children to punishment of a physical nature, such as: shaking, striking, spanking, swatting, thumping, pinching,
popping, shoving, spatting, biting, hair pulling, yanking, slamming, excessive exercise or any cruel treatment that may cause
pain;
2. Put anything in or on a child’s mouth as punishment;
3. Restrain a child by any means other than holding and then for only as long as is necessary for the child to regain control;
4. Subject children to punishment of a psychological nature, such as: humiliation by derogatory or sarcastic remarks about
them or their families, race, gender, religion or cultural background;
5. Use harsh or profane language or actual or implied threats of physical punishment;
6. Punish or threaten children in association with food, rest or toilet training;
7. Isolate a child without supervision or placing him/her in a dark area;
8. Permit children to discipline other children; or
9. Seek or accept parental permission to use any punishment or act prohibited by the requirements contained in this
section.
FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE REGULATIONS
WILL BE GROUNDS FOR IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL.
Other essential requirements:
1.
Quick, stable mental ability, able to react positively to stress.
2.
Hearing: able to hear the children at both active and quiet times; able to detect changes in sound such as a child
starting to wheeze or when it gets too quiet.
3.
Seeing: able to see a child across the farthest point on the playground or the classroom; able to do all required paper
work.
4.
Able to lift, carry and hold children or objects up to 50 pounds.
5.
Physically able to stoop, bend, kneel, etc. perform duties of the job.
6.
Able to stay awake and alert throughout the day.
7.
Practice good hygiene daily.
8.
Use proper handwashing techniques and universal precautions, according to the KI BOIS Program Plan.
9.
Dress so that she/he can physically perform the job, according to KI BOIS Dress Code and other regulations.
10. Sit with children at mealtimes, eating the same meals.
11. Be dependable, energetic, friendly, communicative, non-judgmental.
12. Possess a kind and caring attitude.
13. Maintain confidentiality of children, families and staff.
14. View your work as a part of the KI BOIS team and work in close cooperation with co-workers and fellow employees.
15. Willing to accept and implement constructive criticism and recommendations for improvement.
16. Be an advocate for Head Start and the KI BOIS Community Action.
17. Assisting in recruitment of children for enrollment.
18. Will work 40 hours per week, except for Special Needs Workers, Part-time Teacher Aides and other staff hired for
specific part-time positions.
19. Attend Pre-Service and In-Service Training and other training requested, which may include overnight out-of area stays.
20. Have access to an automobile with current liability insurance, and have a valid Oklahoma Driver's License.
21. Abide by all rules and regulations as set forth KI BOIS Community Action Personnel Policies.
22. Report all safety issues, mistreatment of children, or inappropriate actions of co-workers to immediate supervisor or
other administrative staff.
23. Perform all other related duties as required by the Head Start Director or her designee.
