Question 2 (Worth 2 points)

What is a limitation of using electron microscopes to view specimens?

You cannot view transparent specimens because of the microscope’s low resolution.

Electron beams are dangerous and can only be used sparingly.

You cannot view live specimens because the necessary preparation kills cells.

Resolution is weak and cannot make out details of very small specimens.

Transmission electron microscope

Scanning electron microscope

Compound light microscope

Dissecting microscope

Question 4 (Worth 5 points)

Compare and contrast a compound light microscope and a transmission electron microscope. Be sure to discuss the structure and operation of each, as well as the function and usefulness of each when examining specimens.

A Compound Light Microscope is used in the schools and colleges a lot. It has two lenses; the objective lens and the ocular lens. The Compound light microscope usually has more than one magnification power, ranging from 40 times up to 400 or even 1,000 times the true size of the specimen. It is also used to view tissue samples, blood, micro-organisms in pond water, microscopic cells, and some of the larger details within the cells.

A Transmission Electron Microscope has the same basic principles as the light microscope, though, the microscope instead of using light, it uses electrons. These microscopes use electrons as a "light source". Due to the low wavelength it makes, it is possible to get a resolution better than with a light microscope.

Question 5 (Worth 5 points)

Describe the details you were able to see when viewing specimens with the scanning electron microscope in the microscope activity.

Essay Submission

When you use a scanning electron microscope, you are able to see the structure of the sample you have. You can see what the sample is made of and what living organisms it may have in images generated in 3D, and black and white.
