 The Silk Road connected the Romans in Italy to the Han Dynasty in
China. The Chinese traded jade and silk for glass from Rome and
spices from India.
 The US has 3.9 million miles of roads and highways.
 Highway Interstate Numbers Facts:
o Routes that are north-south are odd numbers (I-5, I-35, I-45)
o Routes that are east-west are even numbers (I-10, I-20)
o For North-South Interstates the lowest numbers begin in the
west (I-5 is the western most Interstate)
o For East-West Interstates the lowest numbers begin in the
south (1-10 is the southernmost interstate)
o Texas has the most Interstate miles with 3,232.04 miles.
 In 2010 a traffic jam on National Highway 110 near Beijing lasted for
10 days. The traffic jam was 60 miles long and vehicles were stuck
moving 1 mile per day.
 Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337 in the Texas Hill Country are known
as the Three Twisted Sisters. One section of 15 miles has over 65
curves. They are favorite routes for motorcycle riders.
 The scenic 464-mile long Natchez Trace Parkway goes from
Nashville, Tennessee to Natchez, Mississippi.
o The Trace has only one section with stop signs and traffic
(Jackson, Mississippi)
o No commercial vehicles are allowed.
o The Trace began as wildlife trails followed by prehistoric Indian
groups, and then the Choctaw and Chickasaw.
