Speakers
Traci Scott RN, CDE is currently
employed with the Children's Hospital of
Georgia. She is a South Carolina Youth
Diabetes Association Board Member.
However, her favorite job is being a mom of
two boys, one of which has Type 1 Diabetes.
Traci also enjoys working at summer diabetes
camps.
Andrea M. Williams, RN, BSN, MSN is
the State School Nurse Consultant at the SC
Department of Health & Environmental
Control. She has worked in school health for
25 years as a School Nurse; two of those
years were with DHEC’s Preschool
Health Appraisal Program (PSHAP). She has
provided direct medical care and
management to students during the school
day as it relates to: acute and chronic illness;
individual health care plans/emergency
action plan; self-care; health education;
collaboration of needs; patient advocacy;
and referrals.
A. Lane Bowen, FNP-C is a boardcertified family nurse practitioner
specializing in rural healthcare. She is a
graduate of the University of South Carolina
School of Nursing, where she received her
Bachelor and Masters degrees of nursing. She
is a National Health Service Corps participant
and is practicing in a family practice in
Winnsboro, SC, with patients across the
lifespan in acute, chronic, and preventive
healthcare.

From I-77 N (from Rock Hill)
1. Travel southbound on I-77, take Exit
65, and turn left onto SC Hwy 9
toward Richburg.
2. Cross over I-77 and turn left at first
curb cut. Then, take an immediate
left onto Commerce Drive. Follow the
road back 3/10 mile, and the
Conference Center is on the right.

1. Travel northbound on I-77, take Exit
65, and turn right onto SC Hwy 9
toward Richburg.
2. Turn left at first curb cut. Then, take

and the Conference Center is on the
right.
From I-85 S (from Greenville)
1. Merge onto I-385 S. (After 23 miles, I385 becomes I-26 E.)
2. Take Exit 54, SC-72, toward
Clinton/Whitmire.
3. Turn left onto SC-72.
4. Turn left onto Union Street/SC-72E in
Whitmire. Continue to follow SC-72E.
5. After 27 miles, SC-72 E becomes West
End Street/SC-121/SC-276/SC-72.
6. Turn right onto US-321 Bypass.
7. Turn right onto SC Hwy 9.
8. Travel approximately 11 miles, go over
I-77 and take first curb cut to the left
after bridge. Then, take an immediate
left onto Commerce Drive. Follow the
road back 3/10 mile, and the
Conference Center is on the right.

 Define Diabetes and review HgbA1c, types of
insulin and management of hypoglycemia.
 Understand the management of diabetes in
the school setting including carbohydrate
counting, insulin sensitivity factor and testing
for ketones.
 Discuss a student centered approach and sick
day management.
 Identify basic differences in four major
insulin pumps and troubleshooting those
pumps.

 Understand why documentation is important
to nursing practice.
 Adequately document a clinical encounter by
utilizing assessment skills and best-practices.
“Assessments and Common Ailments”
 Identify the different types of common
rashes, bites and infectious disease of
children.
 Recognize common musculoskeletal issues in
children.
 Differentiate between common EENT
problems and infections in children.
